What Are IEC Standards?
IEC standards are internationally agreed technical specifications published by the International Electrotechnical Commission to ensure the safety, interoperability, and reliability of electrical, electronic, and related technologies across global markets. Each standard defines requirements, test methods, terminology, or performance criteria for a specific product type, system, or technology domain, and is identified by a number and series designation, such as IEC 60950 for information technology equipment safety or IEC 61850 for communication networks in electrical substations. The IEC produces more than 10,000 active standards covering everything from household appliances and power cables to industrial control systems and medical devices, and these specifications form the technical basis for national regulations in most member countries.
IEC standards draw on contributions from more than 170 national committees and are developed through a consensus process governed by the ISO/IEC Directives. They intersect with both national safety codes and international trade rules, since conformity to IEC specifications is frequently referenced in procurement requirements, customs declarations, and regulatory approvals for electrical equipment.
Structure and Numbering System
IEC standards are organized into numbered series, each corresponding to a technical domain managed by a dedicated technical committee or subcommittee. The IEC 60000 series covers foundational electrical vocabulary and component specifications; the IEC 61000 series addresses electromagnetic compatibility; the IEC 62000 series spans smart energy, photovoltaic systems, and batteries. Within a series, individual documents carry part numbers that differentiate scope, such as IEC 61000-4-2 for electrostatic discharge testing versus IEC 61000-4-5 for surge immunity. Revision history is tracked through edition numbers, and older editions remain cited in legacy infrastructure specifications even after newer editions are published.
The Common Information Model
One particularly influential family of IEC standards is the Common Information Model (CIM), defined across the IEC 61968, IEC 61970, and IEC 62325 series for electric utility operations. The CIM is an abstract, object-oriented data model that represents power system resources, including generators, transformers, circuit breakers, and meters, as classes with defined attributes and relationships. Expressed in Unified Modeling Language notation, the CIM provides a platform-independent schema that enables software systems from different vendors to exchange operational and asset data without custom translation layers. Safety Standards and Conformity Assessment
A large portion of IEC standards activity targets product safety, with series such as IEC 60065 (audio-visual equipment), IEC 60335 (household appliances), and IEC 60601 (medical electrical equipment) setting the technical requirements that manufacturers must meet before products enter regulated markets.
