What Are the Humanities?

The humanities are the academic disciplines that study human culture, expression, and thought through interpretation of the records people leave behind: texts, languages, artworks, buildings, performances, artifacts, and beliefs. They are conventionally distinguished from the natural sciences, which explain the physical world through experiment and measurement, and from the social sciences, which model human behavior in aggregate through statistical and empirical methods. The distinction is one of emphasis rather than a firm boundary, since history and linguistics sit close to the social sciences and archaeology depends directly on physics, chemistry, and geology. What unifies the humanities is a commitment to interpreting particular works and events in their context and to arguing about meaning rather than establishing general laws.

The disciplinary core includes history, philosophy, literature and the study of natural languages, religious studies, art history, musicology, and the performing arts of dance and drama. Classical philology and rhetoric supplied the earliest methods, and modern practice retains their emphasis on close reading, source criticism, and the establishment of reliable texts and chronologies.

Disciplines and Methods

Each humanistic discipline is defined by the evidence it interprets and the techniques it applies to that evidence. History works from documentary and material sources, weighing provenance, bias, and completeness before drawing inference. Philology and textual criticism reconstruct what an author most plausibly wrote from divergent manuscript copies. Art history and musicology combine formal analysis of the work with archival research into patronage, technique, and reception. Philosophy proceeds by argument rather than by evidence gathering, examining the concepts other disciplines take for granted. Archaeology is the most instrumented of the group, drawing on radiocarbon and luminescence dating, isotope and residue analysis, geophysical prospection, and materials characterization to date and source objects that carry no written record.

Digital Humanities

Computational methods now form a recognized subfield. Digital humanities applies text encoding, database design, statistical analysis, topic modeling, network analysis, and visualization to humanistic questions, and it treats the resulting digital corpora and tools as scholarly outputs in their own right. The United States National Endowment for the Humanities Office of Digital Humanities, established in 2008, funds much of this work in the country. The scale involved has grown quickly: NEH-supported projects working with the HathiTrust Digital Library have moved toward computational analysis across millions of digitized volumes, which allows questions about vocabulary change, genre, and circulation to be posed over a whole print record rather than a sampled canon. The subfield also raises its own methodological problems, since optical character recognition errors, uneven digitization, and metadata gaps all bias results in ways a reader of a single book would never encounter.

Cultural Heritage Documentation

Recording and preserving material culture has become a substantial engineering activity. Photogrammetry, structured light scanning, and terrestrial laser scanning produce measured three-dimensional records of objects, sculptures, and standing buildings, supporting conservation planning and reconstruction after damage. Multispectral and X-ray fluorescence imaging recover erased or overpainted text and reveal pigment composition without sampling. Airborne lidar has reshaped landscape archaeology by stripping vegetation from elevation models: a laser scanning survey of northern Guatemala mapped more than 2,000 square kilometers of Maya lowland terrain and exposed causeways, terraces, and settlement density that ground survey had not detected.
