What Is HDMI?
HDMI, short for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is a licensed digital interface that carries uncompressed video, multichannel audio, device control messages, and content protection over a single cable between a source and a display. It was introduced in 2002 by a group of consumer electronics and film companies as a successor to analog component video and to the earlier all-digital DVI connector, and it is now the default display connection on televisions, set-top boxes, game consoles, cameras, projectors, and laptops. Because pixel values travel as digital symbols rather than modulated voltages, the image a display reconstructs is identical to the one the source produced, which removes the ghosting and color drift that long cable runs introduced in analog systems.
The interface is defined by a proprietary specification rather than an open standard. Versions 1.0 through 1.4b were issued by the founding companies, while every release from 2.0 onward comes from the HDMI Forum, whose published HDMI specification versions set the electrical, protocol, and feature requirements that certified products must satisfy.
Link Architecture and Signaling
Through HDMI 2.0, the physical layer used transition-minimized differential signaling (TMDS), in which three differential pairs carry 8b/10b encoded pixel data alongside a fourth pair supplying a pixel clock. That arrangement tops out near 6 Gbit/s per lane, giving an aggregate payload of roughly 18 Gbit/s, which is enough for 4K at 60 Hz with 8-bit color. HDMI 2.1 added fixed rate link (FRL) signaling, which drops the dedicated clock pair, uses all four lanes for data at rates up to 12 Gbit/s each, and switches to a 16b/18b line code, raising the ceiling to 48 Gbit/s. Source and sink negotiate the lane count and per-lane rate through a link training exchange, and formats that still exceed the negotiated capacity can be carried using Display Stream Compression, a visually lossless codec adopted from VESA.
Audio, Control, and Content Protection
HDMI carries audio inside the blanking intervals of the video stream, supporting multichannel linear PCM as well as bitstream formats intended for decoding in an external receiver. The Audio Return Channel, and its higher-bandwidth successor eARC, reverses that flow so a television can send audio from its own tuner or streaming application back to a soundbar on the same cable. Consumer Electronics Control adds a low-speed single-wire bus for commands such as power on, input switching, and volume, which is why one remote can drive several linked devices. Commercial content is protected by High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, a licensed authentication and encryption layer whose 2.3 revision governs current HDMI products and requires a receiver to prove it holds valid keys before the source transmits protected material.
Version Milestones and Feature Sets
Each specification release bundles new video formats with optional features that manufacturers may or may not implement, a distinction that causes frequent confusion in product marketing. The HDMI Forum's release of version 2.1 in 2017 introduced 8K at 60 Hz, 4K at 120 Hz, dynamic HDR metadata carried frame by frame, variable refresh rate, auto low latency mode, quick media switching, and quick frame transport. The 2.2 specification extends bandwidth further and adds full 4:4:4 chroma sampling at 8K60 and 4K240 with 10-bit and 12-bit color depth. Separate cable certification programs exist for each bandwidth tier, because moving 48 Gbit/s across a passive copper assembly is a demanding analog engineering problem.
