HD Radio
What Is HD Radio?
HD Radio is a digital broadcasting technology that transmits digital audio and data signals on the same frequency already occupied by an existing analog AM or FM station. The name does not stand for "high definition" in the video sense; it is a proprietary brand name for the In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) system developed by iBiquity Digital Corporation, now part of Xperi. The Federal Communications Commission approved HD Radio as the only IBOC technology authorized for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the United States, and the system is now deployed at thousands of stations across North America.
The technology's defining characteristic is that it requires no new spectrum allocation. Stations transmit their digital signals in sidebands adjacent to the existing analog carrier, allowing listeners with legacy analog receivers to continue receiving the standard signal while listeners with HD Radio-equipped receivers benefit from improved audio quality and supplementary data services.
In-Band On-Channel Architecture
IBOC works by encoding audio using an advanced audio codec and placing the resulting digital bitstream into subcarriers that occupy the spectrum immediately surrounding the station's existing center frequency. For FM stations, the digital subcarriers sit in the upper and lower sidebands of the standard 200 kHz FM channel. For AM stations, the digital signal occupies sidebands flanking the AM carrier within a tightly constrained bandwidth to limit interference with adjacent-channel stations. The technical operating parameters are defined in the NRSC-5-D standard, published by the National Radio Systems Committee, which governs modulation, signal framing, and codec requirements for both FM and AM IBOC transmission.
Audio Quality and Hybrid Operation
FM stations using HD Radio deliver audio quality approaching that of compact disc recordings, a substantial improvement over the analog FM signal, which is subject to multipath distortion and noise. AM stations in digital mode approach the audio quality of analog FM broadcasts, significantly reducing the static and interference that characterize standard AM reception. During a transition period, most stations operate in hybrid mode, broadcasting both the analog and digital signals simultaneously. Receivers lock on to the digital signal when signal strength permits and fall back seamlessly to the analog signal when the digital signal degrades, ensuring uninterrupted listening. Data Services and Multicasting
Beyond improved audio, HD Radio supports the transmission of supplementary data alongside the audio stream. The Radio Data System equivalent for HD Radio delivers Program Service Data, which includes song title, artist name, and station identification text visible on a receiver's display. FM stations can also use the additional digital bandwidth to broadcast up to three secondary audio channels, called HD2 and HD3 channels, which are entirely separate programming streams transmitted within the same licensed frequency. News, weather, and traffic data services are additionally supported through the data layer, enabling stations to deliver real-time information without interfering with the primary audio programming.
