What Is Geography?
Geography is a discipline concerned with the study of Earth's surfaces, environments, and the spatial relationships among natural and human phenomena. It examines how places differ from one another, how physical processes such as tectonics, climate, and hydrology shape the land, and how human activity distributes across and modifies that land. Geography draws on geology, ecology, anthropology, economics, and increasingly on computer science, making it an inherently integrative science that resists clean disciplinary borders.
The discipline organizes knowledge at multiple spatial scales, from the local watershed to the global climate system, and employs both qualitative field methods and quantitative remote sensing, statistical modeling, and computational analysis. Cartography, the craft of representing geographic reality through maps, has long been central to geographic practice and has evolved from hand-drawn surveys into the digital geospatial systems that now underpin navigation, logistics, and environmental science.
Physical Geography
Physical geography investigates the natural systems that operate on and near Earth's surface. Its core subfields include climatology, geomorphology, hydrology, biogeography, and soil science. Climatologists study the distribution and variability of temperature, precipitation, and circulation patterns, connecting surface conditions to atmospheric dynamics. Geomorphologists examine landform evolution through the action of wind, water, ice, and tectonic forces. Hydrologists trace the movement of water through drainage basins, aquifers, and the global hydrological cycle. Biogeographers map the distributions of species and ecosystems, connecting biological patterns to the physical conditions that sustain them. Physical geography provides the baseline characterization of Earth's environments against which human modification can be measured.
Human Geography
Human geography examines how populations, economies, cultures, and political systems organize themselves across space. Economic geography analyzes the location of industries, trade flows, and the spatial structure of markets. Urban geography studies the internal structure of cities, patterns of growth and decline, and the provision of services across metropolitan areas. Political geography maps the territorial organization of states, border dynamics, and the geopolitics of resources. Cultural geography traces how identities, languages, and built environments vary across regions. Human geographers commonly use qualitative interview and ethnographic methods alongside quantitative census and survey data, reflecting the discipline's dual heritage in the humanities and the social sciences.
Geospatial Analysis and GIScience
Geospatial analysis is the computational branch of geography concerned with extracting patterns and relationships from spatially referenced data. Geographic Information Science (GIScience) provides the theoretical foundations for this work, addressing questions of spatial representation, coordinate reference systems, interpolation, and uncertainty quantification. As documented in work from USGS programs on remote sensing and GIS activities, the integration of satellite imagery, field survey data, and census information within a common analytical framework has transformed what geographic questions can be asked and at what temporal resolution. Spatial statistics, including point pattern analysis, spatial autocorrelation, and geographically weighted regression, allow geographers to identify clusters, gradients, and localized relationships that global statistics would obscure.
Research from BU's Remote Sensing and Geospatial Sciences group illustrates how modern geography programs combine satellite data analysis with field-based environmental monitoring to address questions spanning ecology, hydrology, and land-use change. The GIScience program at San Diego State University describes GIScience as the scientific study of data structures and computational techniques for capturing, representing, and processing geographic information.
