Freshwater
What Is Freshwater?
Freshwater is water containing a low concentration of dissolved salts, conventionally less than 1,000 milligrams per liter of total dissolved solids, which distinguishes it from brackish water and from seawater at roughly 35,000 milligrams per liter. The threshold is practical rather than physical: it marks the point below which water can be used directly for drinking, irrigation, and most industrial processes without desalination. As a material, freshwater is never pure H2O. It carries dissolved carbonates, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, silica, and dissolved gases, along with suspended sediment and organic matter, and that composition is what determines its suitability for a given use.
Its abundance is limited and unevenly placed. Of all water on Earth, the US Geological Survey estimates that about 2.5 percent is fresh, and roughly two thirds of that is locked in ice caps and glaciers. Most of the remainder is groundwater. Lakes, rivers, soil moisture, and atmospheric vapor together account for a small fraction of a percent of global water, yet they supply the majority of withdrawals.
Distribution and the Hydrologic Cycle
Freshwater is continuously regenerated by evaporation from the ocean and land surface, transport as atmospheric vapor, and precipitation over land, with the excess of precipitation over evapotranspiration returning to the sea as runoff. Residence times vary by orders of magnitude across the stores that the USGS water inventory enumerates: days for atmospheric moisture, weeks to months for river channels, years to decades for shallow aquifers and lakes, and thousands of years for deep confined groundwater and ice sheets. Withdrawals that exceed recharge draw down the slow stores, which is why aquifer depletion behaves like mining rather than harvesting.
Composition and Quality
Water quality is characterized through a set of measured parameters rather than a single number. Physical measures include temperature, turbidity, and conductivity, the last serving as a rapid proxy for total dissolved solids. Chemical measures include pH, alkalinity, hardness from calcium and magnesium, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate. Biological measures include coliform counts and chlorophyll as an indicator of algal biomass. Contaminants of concern span heavy metals, disinfection byproducts, pesticides, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations set enforceable maximum contaminant levels for these in US public supplies. Hardness and dissolved silica matter separately in engineering contexts because they drive scaling in boilers, heat exchangers, and membrane systems.
Measurement and Monitoring
Quantifying freshwater draws on both ground networks and satellites. Stream gauges record stage and convert it to discharge through a rating curve, observation wells track aquifer levels, and snow pillows and telemetered snow courses estimate the seasonal snowpack that feeds spring runoff. From orbit, the GRACE and GRACE-Follow-On gravity missions detect month-to-month changes in the mass of terrestrial water storage, which made basin-scale groundwater depletion measurable for the first time. Optical and thermal imagery track lake and reservoir extent, radar altimetry measures surface elevation of large water bodies, and in situ sensor networks report conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity continuously. Combining these into a closed water budget for a basin remains difficult because the residual error in each term is comparable to the change being estimated.
