What Is Emotion Regulation?

Emotion regulation, also called emotional regulation, is the set of processes by which people influence which emotions they have, when they have them, and how those emotions are experienced and expressed. It is studied in psychology as a distinct capacity rather than as a byproduct of emotion itself, because the same emotional response can be amplified, dampened, prolonged, or redirected depending on what the person does before and during it. Regulation can be deliberate and effortful, as when someone reinterprets a hostile remark as a sign of the speaker's stress, or automatic and outside awareness, as when attention drifts away from a distressing image. The field addresses both, along with the developmental question of how the capacity is acquired and the clinical question of what happens when it fails.

The modern framework was set out by James Gross in the late 1990s and organizes strategies by where they intervene in the timeline of an emotional response. Regulation attempts that occur before an emotional response is fully generated are called antecedent-focused, while those applied after the response is underway are response-focused. That distinction turned out to predict which strategies work and at what cost.

The Process Model

The process model divides regulation into five families arranged along the emotion-generative sequence. Situation selection means approaching or avoiding circumstances likely to produce a given emotion. Situation modification alters an encountered situation directly. Attentional deployment redirects focus through distraction or concentration. Cognitive change alters the meaning assigned to the situation, the family that includes reappraisal. Response modulation acts on the physiological, experiential, or behavioral output, and includes expressive suppression, exercise, and substance use. A systematic review of strategies and goals across emotion regulation models surveys how this taxonomy relates to competing frameworks and to the question of what a regulation attempt is actually trying to achieve.

Reappraisal and Suppression

The two most studied strategies illustrate why timing matters. Cognitive reappraisal intervenes early, changing the construal of a situation before the full response has taken shape. Expressive suppression intervenes late, inhibiting the outward display of a feeling that has already been generated. Experimental and individual-difference work summarized in Gross's account of the affective, cognitive, and social consequences of emotion regulation found that reappraisal lowers both experienced emotion and expressive behavior with no memory cost, whereas suppression reduces visible expression while leaving the felt experience intact, increases sympathetic activation, and impairs memory for the concurrent situation. Suppression also carries a social cost, raising physiological arousal in conversation partners. Neither strategy is uniformly correct, since effectiveness depends on context and on whether the situation is controllable.

Neural Substrates and Clinical Significance

Neuroimaging consistently implicates a circuit linking regions of the prefrontal cortex to the amygdala, with dorsolateral, dorsomedial, and ventrolateral prefrontal areas and the dorsal anterior cingulate engaged during voluntary downregulation of negative affect. Weakened engagement of that circuit appears across diagnostic boundaries, and research on transdiagnostic alterations in emotion regulation circuits has examined shared reappraisal deficits in depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Difficulty regulating emotion is central to borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders, which is why dialectical behavior therapy and related treatments target regulation skills directly. Measurement combines self-report instruments with physiological indices such as heart rate variability and skin conductance, and this signal set has made regulation a target for affective computing, wearable monitoring, and real-time neurofeedback systems.
