Educational Activities Board

What Is the Educational Activities Board?

The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) is a standing board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers responsible for recommending educational policy to the IEEE Board of Directors and implementing programs that serve members, the engineering community, and the general public through lifelong learning. Established as a formal governance body within IEEE's organizational structure, the EAB oversees the full range of IEEE's educational activities: continuing education for practicing engineers, pre-university outreach, accreditation representation, curriculum development, and faculty support. It operates through a network of committees, each responsible for a distinct program area, and is supported by the IEEE Educational Activities professional staff.

The EAB's mandate is grounded in IEEE's mission to advance technology for the benefit of humanity, with the recognition that this mission depends on the quality and accessibility of technical education at every stage of a professional's career.

Governance and Mandate

The IEEE Educational Activities Board is constituted under the IEEE Board of Directors and follows an operations manual that defines its structure, responsibilities, and procedures. The Board recommends policies on educational matters and coordinates the planning and delivery of educational activities across IEEE's global membership. Voting members include elected officers, committee chairs, and representatives from IEEE's technical societies and geographic regions. The EAB meets regularly throughout the year, with its decisions and policies cascading through IEEE's educational programs. An annual report documents the Board's activities and financial stewardship of the programs under its authority.

Program Areas

The EAB oversees a broad portfolio of programs grouped into several functional areas. Continuing education programs include the IEEE eLearning Library, the IEEE Credentialing Program, and professional development courses that cover emerging technologies from artificial intelligence to power systems. Pre-university programs engage secondary school students in STEM activities, competitions, and IEEE-sponsored events designed to build the pipeline of future engineers. Student programs support the IEEE Student Branch network and IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu, the IEEE honor society for electrical and computer engineering. Each program area is administered by a dedicated committee whose chair reports to the EAB.

Accreditation Activities

Accreditation is a core function of the EAB. Through its Committee on Engineering Technology Accreditation Activities (CETAA) and related bodies, the EAB coordinates IEEE's engagement with ABET in the United States and with equivalent accreditation organizations internationally. IEEE representatives participate in evaluating engineering programs at universities, helping to ensure that accredited programs meet professional competency standards in electrical, computer, and related engineering disciplines. The EAB also monitors changes in accreditation criteria and develops guidelines for IEEE's accreditation representatives, as documented in the EAB Operations Manual maintained on the IEEE website.

Applications

The Educational Activities Board has significance in a range of professional and institutional contexts, including:

  • Setting IEEE policy on continuing education, credentialing, and pre-university outreach
  • Overseeing IEEE representation at engineering accreditation bodies such as ABET
  • Administering the EAB Awards program that recognizes contributions to engineering education
  • Coordinating curriculum development and faculty support resources across IEEE technical societies
  • Supporting global student programs and the IEEE honor society network
  • Guiding IEEE's engagement with governments and industry on workforce development priorities
