What Is Corporate Social Responsibility?
Corporate social responsibility, widely abbreviated CSR, is the management practice by which a firm takes accountability for the social and environmental consequences of its operations, products, and supply chain beyond what law strictly requires. It sits between business management and environmental economics, drawing analytical tools from both: stakeholder theory and governance on one side, externality pricing and life-cycle accounting on the other. The term entered mainstream management vocabulary in the 1950s and 1960s and has since been formalized into auditable standards, reporting frameworks, and, in several jurisdictions, statutory disclosure duties.
The scope of the practice is usually organized around core subjects rather than a single metric. The most widely cited articulation is ISO 26000:2010, Guidance on social responsibility, which treats organizational governance, human rights, labor practices, the environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement as the seven core subjects an organization should address. ISO 26000 is guidance rather than a certifiable management system standard, a deliberate choice that reflects how much of the subject resists a pass or fail audit.
From Philanthropy to ESG
Early corporate social responsibility programs were largely philanthropic: charitable giving, employee volunteering, and community sponsorship funded out of profit and reported in a glossy annual review. The financial framing that displaced it is ESG, the assessment of a company against environmental, social, and governance criteria by investors deciding where to allocate capital. Socially responsible investing applies negative screens that exclude sectors such as tobacco or controversial weapons, while newer ESG integration approaches treat these factors as material financial risks rather than ethical preferences. The distinction matters in practice: a philanthropy budget is discretionary, whereas a material ESG risk shows up in cost of capital, insurance pricing, and regulatory exposure. Voluntary commitment schemes bridge the two, the largest being the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, under which signatory companies commit to baseline conduct on human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.
Measurement, Value Chain Emissions, and Greenwashing
Credibility depends on measurement, and the hardest measurement problem is emissions the company does not directly control. The Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol partitions indirect value chain emissions into fifteen categories spanning purchased goods, transport, use of sold products, and end-of-life treatment, and for most firms these dominate the total. Because Scope 3 figures rest on supplier data and spend-based estimation factors, they carry uncertainty far larger than metered energy consumption, which is precisely where accusations of greenwashing arise. Greenwashing describes environmental claims that overstate performance, rely on unsubstantiated labels, or highlight a small improvement while omitting a larger impact, and regulators in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States have all moved to police it through advertising and securities law. Long-term climate strategies, including science-based emission reduction targets and transition plans with interim milestones, are the current response to the charge that pledges are set too far out to be accountable.
Engineering and Product Decisions
For engineering organizations the practice resolves into concrete design and procurement choices. Responsible mineral sourcing programs trace tantalum, tin, tungsten, and cobalt through smelter audits. Product stewardship shapes decisions on repairability, hazardous substance restriction under regimes such as RoHS and REACH, and end-of-life take-back. Data-intensive firms extend the same logic to energy procurement for data centers, water consumption for cooling, and, more recently, the labor conditions behind data annotation. Professional codes of ethics, including those maintained by engineering societies, place these obligations on individual practitioners as well as on the organization.
