What Is a Compass?
A compass is an instrument that detects and indicates the direction of a magnetic or reference field relative to a navigating vessel, vehicle, or observer. The classical magnetic compass aligns a magnetized needle or card with Earth's geomagnetic field to indicate heading relative to magnetic north, while modern engineering has produced gyroscopic, electronic, and solid-state variants that extend the principle to environments where magnetic sensing alone is insufficient or unreliable. Compasses are foundational instruments in navigation, surveying, and geophysical measurement.
The technology has roots extending back to Han dynasty China, where lodestone devices were used for geomantic purposes before maritime applications emerged. As IEEE Spectrum's history of the magnetic compass describes, European adoption of the instrument by the early 14th century fundamentally altered maritime navigation, enabling year-round operation and long-distance oceanic voyaging that would have been impractical under celestial-only navigation.
Magnetic Compass Principles
A magnetic compass operates on the interaction between a magnetized element and Earth's ambient geomagnetic field, which has both horizontal and vertical components. The horizontal component deflects a suspended magnetized needle toward magnetic north, and the angle between magnetic north and true geographic north at any location is the magnetic declination, a quantity that varies by location and changes slowly over time. Edmund Halley's 1701 isogonic chart was among the earliest systematic mappings of magnetic declination across the Atlantic. Magnetic dip, the vertical component of the field, causes the needle to tilt toward the ground in high-latitude regions and is compensated in aircraft compasses by weighting or fluid damping. Ferrous materials near the compass, shipboard iron, electrical currents, and electronic equipment, introduce local field distortions called deviation that require periodic calibration. Digital and Electronic Compasses
Electronic compasses replace the mechanical needle with solid-state magnetic sensors, typically magnetoresistive or Hall-effect elements arranged to measure two or three orthogonal components of the local magnetic field. A microcontroller combines the measured field components to compute heading, applies stored calibration corrections for hard-iron and soft-iron distortions, and outputs heading data over a digital interface such as I2C or SPI. Three-axis sensors also measure the vertical field component, enabling accurate heading computation even when the sensor is tilted from horizontal. Inertial navigation systems fuse electronic compass data with accelerometers and gyroscopes to maintain heading accuracy through short periods of magnetic interference. Research on compass and navigation sensor fusion in IEEE publications illustrates how combining magnetic, inertial, and GNSS data significantly reduces heading error in autonomous vehicle applications. The dynamic accuracy of solid-state compass modules is typically specified in degrees root mean square, with consumer-grade devices achieving 1 to 5 degrees accuracy and calibrated survey instruments achieving fractions of a degree.
