What Is Broadband?

Broadband is a high-capacity data transmission technology that carries multiple signals and types of traffic simultaneously across a communications medium. The term describes connections that offer substantially greater bandwidth than earlier narrowband or dial-up technologies, enabling the concurrent delivery of voice, video, and data over a single channel. Because the performance threshold for what qualifies as broadband has shifted upward as technology has improved, the ITU and national regulators periodically revise the minimum speed benchmarks that define it.

Broadband spans both wireline and wireless delivery platforms. Its wireline forms include digital subscriber line (DSL) over copper telephone pairs, coaxial cable networks, and fiber-optic systems. Wireless broadband encompasses cellular standards from 3G through 5G as well as fixed wireless access. Each platform differs in the physical medium, achievable data rates, and the distance over which performance is maintained.

DSL Technologies

Digital subscriber line technologies transmit data over the copper twisted-pair wiring already installed in telephone networks, allowing carriers to provide broadband without full infrastructure replacement. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is the most widely deployed variant; it allocates greater bandwidth to the downstream direction than the upstream, matching the dominant usage pattern of residential customers who download far more than they upload. Variants including VDSL2 and G.fast push speeds higher by using shorter loop lengths or advanced modulation schemes. The ITU-T G.990-series recommendations define the physical-layer specifications governing DSL modes, data rate ranges, and symmetry requirements, providing the interoperability framework that allows equipment from different vendors to operate across the same copper plant. Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband delivers high-speed connectivity over cellular radio networks, freeing users from fixed infrastructure. Third-generation (3G) networks introduced packet-switched data at speeds suitable for basic web browsing and early smartphone applications. The Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard, standardized by 3GPP and classified by the ITU as part of its IMT-Advanced family, brought peak download rates in the tens to hundreds of megabits per second range through the use of OFDMA, multiple-input multiple-output antenna techniques, and flat all-IP architecture. The ITU's IMT-Advanced and IMT-2020 framework establishes the technical parameters, including peak data rate, latency, and spectral efficiency, that successive cellular generations must meet to carry the broadband designation.

Broadband Access Infrastructure

The deployment of broadband requires physical infrastructure investments that differ by technology. DSL reuses existing copper telephony plant but is limited by loop length, with performance degrading significantly beyond a few kilometers from the central office. Cable broadband uses hybrid fiber-coaxial architectures and the DOCSIS standard to carry data over television distribution networks. Fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) and passive optical network (PON) deployments eliminate copper in the last mile entirely, removing the distance-dependent performance ceiling. Fixed wireless access provides broadband to locations where laying physical cable is impractical.
