Anthropology
What Is Anthropology?
Anthropology is the social science concerned with the study of human beings across all times and places, covering biological variation, social organization, language, and material culture. It differs from neighboring social sciences in its comparative and integrative ambition: rather than isolating economic behavior or political structure, it asks how those aspects of life fit together within a particular human group, and how the answer varies across groups. The discipline took its modern institutional form in the late nineteenth century, drawing method from natural history and comparative philology and, later, absorbing statistical and computational tools.
North American practice conventionally divides the field into four subfields: sociocultural anthropology, biological or physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistic anthropology. European traditions often separate social anthropology from prehistoric archaeology entirely. Professional infrastructure for the field in the United States runs largely through the American Anthropological Association, which maintains the discipline's ethical code and its section structure.
Sociocultural Anthropology
Sociocultural anthropology studies living human communities and the systems of meaning, kinship, exchange, and authority that organize them. Its signature method is ethnography: extended participant observation in which the researcher lives within a community, learns its language, and records practice as it happens rather than as informants summarize it. Concepts such as ethnicity, which the field treats as a socially constructed and situational category of belonging rather than a fixed biological one, emerged largely from this comparative work. Ethnographic method has since been adopted well outside the discipline, particularly in user research, human-computer interaction, and the design of systems intended for populations whose routines the designers do not share.
Biological Anthropology
Biological anthropology addresses humans as an evolved species: primate behavior and anatomy, the hominin fossil record, human genetic variation, growth, nutrition, and adaptation to environmental stress. Paleoanthropological research programs such as the Smithsonian Institution's Human Origins Program reconstruct hominin lineages from fossil morphology, dated sediments, and increasingly from ancient DNA recovered from bone and dental calculus. A closely related applied branch, anthropometry, produces the body dimension statistics used in ergonomics, protective equipment sizing, vehicle occupant modeling, and workstation design. Forensic anthropology applies the same skeletal expertise to identification of human remains in medicolegal contexts.
Archaeology and Material Evidence
Archaeology recovers human history from the physical traces people leave: settlements, tools, refuse, burials, and modified landscapes. Its dependence on instrumentation is heavy and growing. Radiocarbon and luminescence dating fix chronology, isotope ratios reconstruct diet and migration, and ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, and airborne lidar map buried or vegetation-obscured sites without excavation. The measurement side of this work is formalized as archaeometry, supported in the United States through programs such as the National Science Foundation's Archaeometry program, which funds both the refinement of analytical techniques and the service laboratories that field projects depend on. Photogrammetry, structured-light scanning, and 3D printing now serve routinely for recording and reproducing artifacts that are too fragile to handle.
Linguistic Anthropology
Linguistic anthropology examines language as social action: how speech varies by community and situation, how languages change and are lost, and how linguistic categories shape and reflect social ones. Documentation of endangered languages has produced large annotated audio and video corpora, and those archives have become training and evaluation material for speech technology aimed at low-resource languages.
