What Are Airports?

Airports are planned facilities that provide the infrastructure, services, and operational organization required for aircraft to take off, land, and be serviced between flights. They range from small general aviation fields with a single grass strip to major international hubs with multiple parallel runways, extensive terminal complexes, and coordinated air traffic management systems. An airport functions simultaneously as a transportation hub, a regulated safety environment, and a substantial civil engineering structure, requiring expertise from electrical, civil, mechanical, and systems engineering to design and operate.

Modern airports serve as interchange points between airborne and surface transportation networks and have become centers of commercial activity in their own right. The design principles governing runway geometry, pavement loading, lighting systems, and terminal flows have been developed and standardized through decades of operating experience and are codified by ICAO, the FAA, and national civil aviation authorities.

Airside Infrastructure

The airside portion of an airport encompasses runways, taxiways, aprons, and the navigational aids directly associated with aircraft movement on the ground and in the immediate approach and departure environment. Runway length and pavement strength are calculated for the heaviest aircraft expected to operate at the facility; a runway serving widebody jets such as the Airbus A380 requires pavement capable of supporting single-gear loads exceeding 30 tonnes. Precision approach lighting systems and instrument landing system (ILS) installations at the runway ends allow aircraft to land in low-visibility conditions, with ICAO Category III ILS authorizing approaches down to near-zero runway visual range at the most equipped airports. Terminal and Landside Operations

Landside facilities include roadways, parking structures, rail and bus connections, and access roads calibrated for peak-hour passenger volumes. Air Traffic Control Systems

Air traffic control (ATC) at airports manages the sequencing, separation, and clearance of arriving and departing aircraft as well as surface movements on taxiways and runways. Tower controllers use surveillance data from surface movement radar and multilateration systems to track all aircraft and vehicles on the maneuvering area, especially in low-visibility conditions when visual observation is insufficient. Airport control towers communicate with en-route centers and approach control facilities to coordinate smooth handoffs of traffic.
