What Is Agribusiness?

Agribusiness, sometimes written as agrobusiness, is the system of commercial activity that supplies inputs to farms, produces agricultural commodities, and processes, stores, transports, and distributes them to final consumers. The term was coined in 1957 by John Davis and Ray Goldberg of Harvard Business School, who argued that farming had become too integrated with the industries on either side of it to be studied in isolation. Where agricultural economics traditionally examined the farm as the unit of analysis, agribusiness treats the whole chain from seed and fertilizer manufacture through retail and food service as a single coordinated system.

The field borrows from industrial organization, operations research, logistics, and finance, and it has absorbed a growing share of engineering as farms and processing plants became instrumented. Its practical questions concern vertical coordination, contract design, price risk, cold chain integrity, and the flow of information between actors who rarely see one another.

Input Supply and Farm Production

The upstream segment covers seed genetics, fertilizer and crop protection chemicals, animal feed and health products, irrigation equipment, and farm machinery, together with the credit, insurance, and advisory services that let producers buy them. These industries are capital intensive and concentrated, and their research pipelines set much of what is agronomically possible on the farms downstream. Contract production, in which a processor specifies variety, planting date, and delivery window in advance, is common in poultry, vegetables for processing, and seed multiplication, and it shifts both price risk and quality control away from the individual grower. Development institutions treat this segment as a lever for rural income growth: the World Bank's agribusiness program works on the infrastructure and financial services that connect smallholders to input and output markets.

Processing, Distribution, and Marketing

Downstream of the farm gate sit grain handling and storage, milling, slaughter and meat packing, dairy processing, packaging, wholesale distribution, retail grocery, and food service. Value added in this segment now dwarfs value added on the farm in industrialized economies. The USDA Economic Research Service food dollar series decomposes each consumer dollar spent on domestically produced food into the shares captured by farm production, processing, packaging, transportation, wholesale and retail trade, and food services, and the farm share has been in long-term decline. Analytical work on sustainable agribusiness and agrifood value chain development at FAO applies the same chain framing to lower-income food systems, where post-harvest loss and fragmented logistics often matter more than yield.

Information Systems and Automation

Engineering entered agribusiness first through mechanization and refrigeration and more recently through data. Farm management information systems, satellite and drone imagery, soil and weather sensor networks, variable rate application controllers, and yield monitors generate records that processors and lenders increasingly want to see. Traceability requirements from food safety regulation and private standards push identity preservation back through the chain, and distributed ledger approaches have been proposed to record custody transfers across parties who do not share a database; a survey of blockchain applications in agriculture and food supply chains reviews the pilots and their limitations. Commodity trading, futures hedging, and demand forecasting rely on the same data infrastructure, and automation now extends into sorting, grading, and packing lines built around machine vision.
