The inherent advantages like high efficiency and low noise make the BLDC motors an attractive solution for electrical appliances. Conventional appliance motors are direct online start induction motors and universal motors, which give unsatisfactory control flexibility leading to unnecessary energy consumption. The BLDC motor with electronic controllers gives user- friendly control in appliance application, leading to energy savings. The electronic controller provides the required flexibilities in features and protections to add unique selling proposition (USP). It provides smooth speed control of the motor in wired and wireless mode. The additional electronic controller makes the 3-phase BLDC motor costlier as compared to conventional motors. The work describes an alternative. The present alternative is a low cost 1-phase BLDC motor. The work focuses on the commutation angle estimation and adjustment to get adequate starting torque and also for better efficiency at all the speed ranges. The work describes the effects of hall sensor position, its adaptive estimation and dynamic optimization techniques. The simulated and experimental results show the feasibility of the present design.

The proposed electrical bicycle uses a universal series motor which has a low cost and weight but needs a high supply voltage. Standard batteries have a 24 V supply voltage which is far too low for universal series motor so a DC-DC converter with a high conversion ratio is needed. This paper proposes a soft- switch DC-DC converter with a high conversion ratio with an efficiency of 92%.

  • An alternative universal motor drive with unity power factor operating in DC and AC modes

    In this paper, a novel concept on how a universal motor can operate in either DC or AC mode, with unity power factor is presented. This is achieved using a modified topology of a single phase matrix converter. The power electronics converter that drives the motor, as well as the PWM technique that is used to achieve unity power factor are thoroughly analyzed. The two modes of operation are compared in terms of PF and THD that offer. The complete system is fully simulated and the results are evaluated.

  • The design methodology to develop new-generation universal-motors for vacuum cleaners

    Universal motors (UM) are widely used in the appliance industry. This paper presents the design methodology for new-generation universal-motors for vacuum cleaners. The mathematical model of the universal motor is formed and a computer program based on Matlab with Simulink is developed to calculate the performance of the motor. The Magnet 5.2 finite element analysis is used for design optimisation. Performance tests are conducted on a dynamic-loading test system. A design methodology is developed in MS Visual Basic form. Finally the validity of design methodology is evaluated on theoretical and experimental performance characteristics of two motors, a conventional 20000-RPM dry-wet motor and a new 40000-RPM dry-only motor.

  • Noise emission of universal motor drives

    Flexural and transverse vibrations from static and dynamic components of tensioning forces in belt driven systems can cause changes in the noise radiation from the universal motors of clothes washers. This study describes a successful effort to analyze the effect of tensioning forces on noise emission of the drive system. The data show that principal parameters of tensile forces can cause parametric excitation of transverse and flexural vibrations resulting in a considerable change in the noise emissions of universal motors. Using the correlations for validation and recovery of distorted vibration and acoustic data, optimum tensioning forces, hence quieter operation of the universal motor, can be achieved.

  • Power-factor correction for switched reluctance drives

    This paper evaluates the need for power-factor correction (PFC) in switched reluctance drive systems supplied from single-phase mains. The aim is to achieve interference values lower than the prescribed norms at minimal system costs and volume. It is shown that for certain applications, a PFC circuit has to be implemented, but simpler technical solutions are often possible. Finally, a suggestion is presented as to how a low-cost power-factor-corrected system should be built for high-volume production.

  • Prediction of performance characteristics of a universal motor using parametric finite element analysis

    A procedure is derived that uses finite element analysis to predict the performance characteristics of a typical universal (AC series) motor. A number of different finite element analyses are made with parametric variations of current and rotor position. Then the AC voltage waveform is applied and the resulting performance is computed using a time-stepping algorithm. The computed torque-speed, current-speed, and power-speed curves are shown to agree closely with the measured curves.
