Each object maintains its own set of parameters. With these parameters an initial target estimate is made for each object. Based on the buffer fullness, the total target is adjusted and then distributed proportional to the size, motion, and variance of each object. Appropriate quantization parameters can be calculated for each video object based on the new individual targets and second order model parameters. This algorithm assures that the target bit rate is achieved for low latency video coding.

    This paper describes issues and consideration on authoring of interactive multi-view visual content based on MPEG-4. The issues include types of multi- view visual content; functionalities for user-interaction; scene composition for rendering; and multi-view visual content file format. The MPEG-4 standard, which aims to provide an object based audiovisual coding tool, has been developed to address the emerging needs from communications, interactive broadcasting as well as from mixed service models resulting from technological convergence. Due to the feature of object based coding, the use of MPEG-4 can resolve the format diversity problem of multi-view visual contents while providing high interactivity to users.     In object-based video, the encoding of the video data is decoupled into the encoding of shape, motion and texture information, which enables certain functionalities like content-based interactivity and scalability. However, the problem of how to jointly encode these separate signals to reach the best coding efficiency has never been solved thoroughly. In this paper, we present an operational rate-distortion optimal bit allocation scheme that provides a solution to this problem. Our approach is based on the Lagrangian relaxation and dynamic programming. Experimental results indicate that the proposed optimal encoding approach has considerable gains over an ad-hoc method without optimization. Furthermore the proposed algorithm is much more efficient than exhaustive search.

    In this letter, we explore the rate-distortion (R-D) characteristics of binary shape information in the MPEG-4 standard. The shape coding scheme is a block- based context-based arithmetic encoding approach and distortion is introduced by down and up sampling. Generally, the shape bit rate and nonnormalized distortion increase in proportion with the number of border blocks. At any given resolution scale, the more complex an object, the more distortion that is introduced. Consequently, we propose an R-D model based on the parameters derived from the border blocks and a block-based shape complexity for the video object. The computational complexity is much lower than other existing methods. Experimental results show that it can accurately predict the bit rate and distortion of the binary shape for rate control purposes.

  • Interactive Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) Player

    This paper presents an interactive terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) player. Interactive T-DMB contents consist of basic AV streams and data streams such as BIFS (binary format for scene) streams, OD streams, and image streams. Thus, to play interactive T-DMB contents, BIFS decoder, BIFS manager and JPEG decoder modules are included in the presented player.

  • CNN shape segmentation advantages in MPEG-4 simple profile encoding

    The MPEG-4 core profile offers content-based functionalities. It is shown here that content-based encoders also have advantages in simple profile coding. An intermediate phase of a cellular nonlinear network (CNN) shape segmentation algorithm indicates the area containing motion within a video frame. This information can be used to reduce the required computational power requirements of motion estimation. Depending on the amount of motion in an sequence significant savings in coded bits can be achieved without loss in subjective video quality. The number of computed SADs also shows considerable decrease. The method is simulated with full search and MVFAST but is motion estimation algorithm independent and has increased advantages in MPEG-4 AVC.

  • Design and implementation of MPEG-4 authoring tool

    Under an interactive broadcasting environment, viewers have been requesting additional and linked information of individual contents in TV programs. In order to satisfy these demands from viewers, first of all, it is required to develop a new authoring tool that can edit AV (Audio Visual) contents as independent objects and add related information of the contents. In this paper, we propose an MPEG-4 based authoring tool. The characteristics of our authoring tool are that it generates an XMT file for an object and a scene description, which is then coded into an mp4 file according to the MPEG-4 specification. In order to show the usefulness of the proposed authoring tool, rote show the authored AV contents rising the reference software (IM1 2D player) provided by MPEG.

  • Novel frame selection methods for multi-reference motion estimation

    This paper proposes two efficient frame selection methods to improve rate distortion performance and to reduce the computation complexity for frame selection. The proposed Reference Selection Pass (RSP) method can simplify early termination conditions by using the results of the previous coded blocks. The improved frame selection (IFS) method controls the number of reference frames according to the accuracy of frame selection. The simulation results show the proposed methods can eliminate the overhead of early termination conditions with only 0.05 dB average Bjontegaard Delta (BD)-PSNR degradation.
