ICC 2021 - IEEE International Conference on Communications

IEEE ICC is one of the two flagship IEEE conferences in the field of communications; Montreal is to host this conference in 2021.     Intelligent public transportation is the most efficient method to solve city transportation problems such as public traffic jam, frequent traffic accident, traffic environment pollution and energy sources shortage etc. For designing city-bus intelligent system, the main body in ITS (intelligent transportation system), we analyzed the whole request of society and government, passenger, driver and center of monitoring and management. Based on the whole request analysis, city-bus intelligent control system was divided into three different but correlative request layers: IS (intelligent service), IM (intelligent management) and IC (intelligent control). With layered control method, we designed the framework of city-bus intelligent control system. The system consists of driving information intelligent control system, security alert intelligent control system, public service intelligent control system and transportation monitoring intelligent control system. It uses CAN (controller area network) technology and wireless network transmission technology to transmit control and status information. The experimental results of path loss and delay spread profiles are presented and analyzed.

  • Sound Localization of Approaching Vehicles Using Uniform Microphone Array

    Due to recent trends in society, enhanced car safety is strongly required. As one piece of environmental traffic information, the direction of approaching vehicles can be estimated from an analysis of sound sources. This gives information of approaching vehicles to drivers at intersections when visibility is poor. To prevent traffic accidents, it is necessary to detect the direction of approaching vehicles more accurately and rapidly. This paper describes a scheme that uses a uniform linear microphone array with four microphones to estimate the direction of approaching vehicles. We employ a correlation method to realize sound source localization and we propose a direction estimation method with cubic spline interpolation in Carter, G. C. and Abraham, P. B. (1980). Trials show that the proposed scheme offers good performance.

  • Intelligent Health Monitoring of Critical Infrastructure Systems

    Modern societies have reached a point where everyday life relies heavily on the reliable operation and intelligent management of critical infrastructures, such as electric power systems, telecommunication networks, water distribution networks, and transportation systems. Monitoring and controlling such systems is becoming increasingly more challenging as their size, complexity and interactions are steadily growing. Moreover, these critical infrastructures are susceptible to natural disasters, frequent failures, as well as malicious attacks. There is a need to develop a common system-theoretic framework for modeling the behavior of critical infrastructure systems and for designing algorithms and architectures for intelligent monitoring, control and security of such systems. The goal of this keynote plenary presentation is to motivate the key role of fault diagnostics and fault tolerant control methodologies in securing the reliable operation of critical infrastructure systems, and to provide an adaptive system-theoretic framework for achieving early detection, isolation and accommodation of faults in large-scale nonlinear dynamic systems. Various ideas based on distributed fault diagnostics and adaptive approximation techniques with learning algorithms will be presented, and directions for future research will be discussed. This paper provides a brief outline of the keynote plenary presentation.

  • The European Integrated Project "SAFESPOT"-How ADAS applications co-operate for the driving safety

    SAFESPOT is a relevant initiative, in the form of an integrated project (IP), co-funded by the European Commission Information Society Technologies, which is aimed at understanding and assessing the potential of a co-operative approach in terms of road transport safety improvement. Such initiative is also directly supported by EUCAR, the research association of the car manufacturers. The paper covers some aspects of the vehicle centered applications, showing specifically the peculiarities and the benefits of the co-operative approach. Some of the limits of the classical ADAS applications are also pointed out and compared to the V2V and V2I communication approach.

  • An autonomous car-like robot navigating safely among pedestrians

    The recent development of a new kind of public transportation system relies on a particular double-steering kinematic structure enhancing maneuverability in cluttered environments such as downtown areas. We call bi-steerable car a vehicle showing this kind of kinematics. Endowed with autonomy capacities, the bi-steerable car ought to combine suitably and safely a set of abilities: simultaneous localisation and environment modelling, motion planning and motion execution amidst moderately dynamic obstacles. In this paper we address the integration of these four essential autonomy abilities into a single application. Specifically, we aim at reactive execution of planned motion. We address the fusion of controls issued from the control law and the obstacle avoidance module using probabilistic techniques.

  • Developing autonomous maneuvering capabilities for future cars

    Developing intelligent transportation systems which take into consideration the socio-economical, environmental, and safety factors of the modern society, is one of the grand challenges of the next century. Progress in the fields of mobile robots, control architectures, and computer vision allows us to now envisage the integration of autonomous and driving-assistance capabilities within future vehicles. The paper presents the concept of the "automated urban vehicle" which is currently developed within the scope of the French "Praxitele" and "automated road" programmes. It focuses on the control and decisional architecture which has been developed for providing each vehicle with the required autonomous capabilities. Experimental results obtained with our automatic electric vehicles are presented for three types of manoeuvres: lane following/changing, parallel parking, and platooning.
