  • Software Product Quality Metrics

    The software product metrics is classified into software product size metrics and software attributes metrics. The process of applying a metric or set of metrics is similar to the implementation of new procedures or methodologies. The statistically analyzed metrics data provides opportunities for comparing a series of project metrics. Software quality assurance and software engineering professionals distinguished between software product metrics and software process metrics. The function point (FP) method estimates of development resources, based entirely on the software requirement specification, can be prepared at the preproject stage and can, therefore, support the management in its project proposal and preparation efforts. A comprehensive presentation of software product metrics is presented in three parts of the ISO/IEC TR 9126. The ISO/IEC technical reports relate to 10 attributes of software products: software functionality, software reliability, software usability, software efficiency, software maintainability, software portability, software effectiveness, software productivity, software safety, and software satisfaction.

  • International Laser Standards

    As early as January 1987, the LAA board initiated its involvement with the laser committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In the early 1980s, Germany adopted a standard for the threads on microscope objectives, and proposed that the standard be adopted by the International Organization for Standards. It was the IEC Laser Committee (IEC TC76) that was developing standards for laser eye safety. But there were no standards for the lasers' parameters themselves. In order to implement their?>integrated market,?>the Europeans needed standards - on literally everything - that would facilitate intra-European trade. The LEOMA board was determined not to continue the expensive standards assessment into a fourth year. The board decided to request that the two major laser conferences in the United States - CLEO and OPTCON - add a standards fee to every exhibitor at those conferences. LEOMA was fortunate to find so quickly the path to successful interaction with the European standards organizations.

  • Software Process Quality Metrics

    Software quality metrics are quantitative measures of the attributes of a software system as a product and also in its development and operative processes. Measures are based on relevant collected data related to these attributes. This chapter discusses software process metrics that are classified into four classes: software development process quality metrics, software operation process quality metrics, software maintenance process quality metrics and management process quality metrics. Software maintenance activities include corrective maintenance, adaptive maintenance and functional improvement maintenance. The unique obstacles in the application of software quality metrics, such as comparing performances for managerial use, are rooted in the attributes measured. As a result, most commonly used metrics suffer from low validity and limited comprehensiveness. The difficulties in applying software quality metrics, especially for decision‐making in the context of software development are discussed.

  • Color transformations for lossless image compression

    The paper defines the conditions for the coefficients of a linear color transformation that guarantee that after one cycle of transformation and inverse transformation all further cycles of transformation do not introduce rounding errors to sample values. Moreover, the upper limits of the rounding error can be calculated according to the formulas given in the paper. The results are very important for nearly lossless compression of color images. Color transformations that decorrelate color components allow a significant increase in compression ratio achieved by use of standard lossles compression techniques applied independently to the components. The results of the paper prove that further cycles of compression and decompression together with color transformations do not increase the rounding errors. The experimental results for the RGB → YCRCBtransformation are also included.
