  • Editorial - Fiftieth anniversary of TDEI

This year the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (TDEI) is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. TDEI actually began in 1994 when 'Dielectrics' was added to the previous title of the same publication of IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation (TEI). The first issue of TEI was published in March 1965, fifty years ago, with a very modest beginning. That first issue, which can be accessed on IEEE Xplore, had only four papers constituting a total of 19 printed pages. TEI was international in outlook right from its beginning. The four papers in the first issue were submitted from Japan (one paper) and the USA (three papers). The second issue of TEI was published in November 1965 and had papers from the United Kingdom (two) and the USA (one). In its first year TEI had a total of seven papers totaling 48 pages. These papers covered a wide range of topics such as electrical failure of organic insulators, thermal behavior of enamel wires and other solid insulation, electrical breakdown of solids and gaseous insulation. Papers on these topics may still be seen in recent issues of TDEI.

  • Special issue on power modulators and repetitive pulsed power [Editorial]

It is our pleasure to present to the professional reader this "third" Special Issue on Power Modulators and Repetitive Pulsed Power of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (previous issues were published in 2007 and 2009), and the fifth such Special Issue published by an IEEE Transactions (1991-IEEE TED; 2005-IEEE TPS). Most of the papers that appear in this issue are based on contributions to the 2010 International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference, which was held in Atlanta, GA, from May 23rd to 27th, 2011. Others heeded the "Call for Papers" that attracted many contributions in the general field of interest to this Special Issue.

  • Editorial: Power modulators and repetitive pulsed power

This is the Seventh Special Issue on Power Modulators and Repetitive Pulsed Power in the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation and the tenth issue published by IEEE. The issue highlights topics from the IEEE DEIS International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC), and it is published biannually. Several of the papers in this issue are based on presentations given at the 2018 IPMHVC in Jackson, Wyoming, June 3rd–7th, 2018, and those papers were significantly extended in content by the authors to distinguish the papers from the 2018 IPMHVC Conference Proceedings. This special issue was open to all authors, and the majority of the papers are new submissions not included in the conference proceedings.

  • Editorial: Condition monitoring and diagnostics

This special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (TDEI) is devoted to Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics (CMD) of high voltage insulation systems, with special focus on highlights in research and engineering. Clear trend towards widespread and global diagnostics of insulation systems of power equipment becomes a fact, driven by multi-stress operational conditions including more and more power electronics based switching devices, and the strive for higher transmission capacity. Permanently requirements with respect to safety and reliability in electric power and industrial networks as well as their environmental impacts have highest priorities.
