Absorption and dispersion of low-loss dielectrics measured with microwave transient radiation

Electronics Letters, 1989

Measurements of the frequency-dependent loss and dispersion of low-loss dielectrics, between 10 and 130 GHz, are presented. The data are obtained from a single experiment using the picosecond transient radiation from optoelectronically pulsed integrated antennas.<<ETX>>

Arbitrarily oriented perfectly matched layer in the frequency domain

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2000

An arbitrarily oriented perfectly matched layer (PML) is introduced by using complex space mapping for more flexible meshing of microwave engineering problems. The PML can be oriented in any direction. The discussion is extended to two-direction PMLs for matching the interface between one-direction PMLs, and three-direction PMLs for two-direction ones. An example having analytical solution is calculated, Numerical results agree ...

  • Forbidden directions for TM waves in anisotropic conducting media

We investigate the wave propagation properties of nonuniform plane waves in an (unbounded homogeneous) anisotropic conducting material. Such waves (for which amplitudes vary across surfaces of constant phase) characterize the refracted field in an imperfect dielectric, like the earth when a uniform electromagnetic plane wave is incident from the air. The results, presented in terms of polar diagrams of the attenuation, slowness, energy velocity, and quality factor predict the existence of "stopbands" beyond a given degree of nonuniformity (i.e., combinations of propagation and attenuation directions where there is no wave propagation). This is a peculiar, effect due to the joint presence of anisotropy and conductivity that may have application in the design of synthetic materials acting as absorbers of electromagnetic radiation.

  • A path integral time-domain method for electromagnetic scattering

A new full wave time-domain formulation for the electromagnetic field is obtained by means of a path integral. The path integral propagator is derived via a state variable approach starting with Maxwell's differential equations in tensor form. A numerical method for evaluating the path integral is presented and numerical dispersion and stability conditions are derived and numerical error is discussed. An absorbing boundary condition is demonstrated for the one-dimensional (1-D) case. It is shown that this time domain method is characterized by the unconditional stability of the path integral equations and by its ability to propagate an electromagnetic wave at the Nyquist limit, two numerical points per wavelength. As a consequence the calculated fields are not subject to numerical dispersion. Other advantages in comparison to presently popular time-domain techniques are that it avoids time interval interleaving and it does not require the methods of linear algebra such as basis function selection or matrix methods.

  • Extension of Berenger's absorbing boundary conditions to match dielectric anisotropic media

The authors propose an extension of Berenger's perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) to achieve a perfect matching of waves propagating in anisotropic media. Although the procedure to obtain the matching conditions is valid for any kind of anisotropic material, it has been validated with a lossless two-dimensional uniaxial medium, in which the optical axis is not contained in its plane section. The finite difference time domain method, with an alternative scheme for anisotropic media, is used to simulate the problem and to obtain the numerical reflection coefficient.
