  • Some features of domestic electric cooking and heating

    Although electric cooking and heating has always been considered possible, it has only recently become popular; hence the engineer is found unprepared with information on the characteristics of the load. From tests made on a number of domestic cooking and heating installations, it would appear that electric cooking has a better load factor than a lighting load and that this load factor improves as the number of ranges increases. The errors incident to these tests are discussed. The demand factors on being plotted against number of ranges appear to follow a logarithmic curve which may be accounted for by the fact that a modification of the law of probability would no doubt determine the probable coincident demand of a number of ranges and that this law is a logarithmic function. Suggestions are made for the checking of these results by others. In the heating field, the effect of water heaters superimposed on range loads is discussed in relation to their effect on the central station loads and income.

    John Coffee Hays (by letter): In arousing public interest in the conservation of our natural resources the impression has been generally given in discussions and newspapers and magazine articles, that there was a very much larger waste going on than actually exists, and it would seem therefore that the time is now ripe for the engineers to discuss the different points of the question more in detail, and show what work has already been done in the direction of conservation, and what in their opinion should be done in the future toward the use of our resources in the most economical manner. From the very nature of the work, engineering is more closely connected with the conservation of resources than is any other profession, and the engineer should lend every effort in his power to the general education of the public in this respect, and should discuss the various points of the subject practically and forcibly in line with his convictions and experience.

    No attempt will be made in this paper to define the conditions under which indirect distribution, through the medium of transformer sub-stations, is more economical than direct distribution from one or more generating stations containing prime movers. It is assumed that because of the size of the railways to be considered, and the local conditions determining the cost of generating power, the indirect method of distribution has been selected as offering the best economy in commercial operation, and an attempt will be made to outline a general method for determining the number and location of sub- stations.

  • The telephone wire plant

    Telephone engineering has been looked upon by many engineers as principally a switchboard problem. The switchboard problem was undoubtedly deserving of the great amount of attention given to it by telephone engineers, and the results are everywhere evident to-day in the perfect working mechanisms of the modern, central battery switchboard. An analysis of the construction costs of the telephone plant will, however, show that from two-thirds to three-fourths of the total expenditure is required for the outside plant; that is, for conduits, poles, cables, and wire. Because of the very large proportional expenditures for the outside plant, it becomes evident that the systems of line distribution should be most carefully studied in order that the best service may be given at the lowest cost.
