    In order to meet experimental requirements an ANAC source is being replaced with a modern high intensity source expected to yield in excess of 100 mu A DC H/sup +/ and D/sup +/ ion beams and/or at least 10 mu A DC H/sup -/ and D/sup -/ ion beams. Of the various proven state-of-the-art polarized ion source technologies, the system recently built and brought into successful operation best meets all needs. In 1989 the authors began acquiring design specifications from TUNL to build HIPIOS (High Intensity Polarized Ion Source). Based on TUNL's experience, HIPIOS should produce in excess of 100 mu A DC H/sup +/ and D/sup +/ ion beams. It employs cold ( approximately 30 K) atomic beam technology, a proven method for generating intense neutral atomic beams.<<ETX>>

Such beams have a phase structure that appears twisted and as a result an intensity null in the center of the beam cross section. Here we numerically investigate twisted beams for incoherent scatter radars that are used to study the ionosphere. We discuss the possibility of utilizing such radar beams to probe twisted beams of plasma waves and flows transverse to the beam axis, such as associated with auroral arcs. Transverse plasma flows may give rise to a rotational frequency shift of the scatter from a twisted beam and Doppler broadening due to the beam divergence, the latter also occurring with regular beams. Although the angular momentum effects of the considered large scale flows are generally small, sheared and vortical flows transverse to the beam axis can in principle be discriminated from unidirectional flows with beams carrying orbital angular momentum.

The space charge effect is evaluated for the beamline in the high current beam. The beam optics concerned with the effects of space charge and a large momentum spread during the half-mini beta system is investigated for the study of the warm dense matter science in KEK.

    A plasma mixing device in which a helium plasma beam is crossed with a molecular fluorine beam was used to operate an atomic fluorine laser. Operation conditions confirm that excitation occurs through collisions of helium metastables and F/sub 2/ molecules. Collisions with other F-donors, such as NF/sub 3/, CF/sub 4/, C/sub 2/F/sub 6/, and SF/sub 6/, do not yield F-atoms in one of the possible upper laser levels. In lasers using such F-donors, excitation has to occur through electron collisions with F-atoms which have been generated in a preceding process.<<ETX>>
