  • HTS Components for High Voltage Resistive Current Limiters Based on a Magnetic Field Triggered Concept

    On the basis of the successful field test of the current limiter CURL 10 a superconducting resistive current limiter for the transmission level is projected (CULT 110). It is also based on melt cast processed BSCCO 2212 but uses a novel protection concept via magnetic field triggering, which reduces the needed superconducting length by nearly one order of magnitude. The present state of development of the superconducting components including the optimization of the magnetic trigger coils is reported. Numerical simulations confirm the reliability of the protection mechanism. First successful short circuit experiments with full-scale components are presented.

  • AC losses of HTS coils carrying transport current

    In the paper, the authors report the experimental results for AC losses in an HTS coil carrying AC transport current. The tests of AC losses were performed by the electrical method at 77 K and 4.2 K. The HTS tape consists of 55 multifilamentary silver-sheathed BSCCO 2223 tape without twisting. The sample coil was made by the react-and-wind method using insulated tape conductor. The coil has an inner diameter of 46 mm, outer diameter of 87 mm, height of 14.5 mm, and the number of turns is 300. The measured AC losses were compared with the conventional theory based on the critical state model. In the region of low transport current, the theoretical results agreed well the experimental results. The authors also investigated the distribution of the AC losses in the coil to study the effects of magnetic field distribution on AC losses.

  • Evaluation of Electrical Properties of Lap Joints for BSCCO and YBCO Tapes

    The joint process between tapes of coated conductors is a critical issue for the most of the applications of high temperature superconductors (HTS). Using different fabrication techniques joints of YBCO coated superconductors were prepared and characterized through electrical measurements. For soldering material low melting point eutectic alloys, such as In-Sn (m.p. 116degC) and Sn-Pb (m.p. 189degC) were selected to prepare lap joints with effective length between 1 to 20 cm. The splice resistance and the critical current of the joints were evaluated by I-V curve measurements with the maximum current strength above the critical current, in order to evaluate the degree of degradation for each joint method. Pressed lap joints prepared with tapes without external reinforcement presented low resistance lap joint nevertheless some critical current degradation occurs when strong pressing is applied. When mechanical pressure is applied during the soldering process we can reduce the thickness of the solder alloy and a residual resistance arises from contributions of high resistivity matrix and external reinforcement. The lap joints for reinforced tape were prepared using two methods: the first, using ldquoas-suppliedrdquo tape and the other after reinforcement-removal; in the latter case, the tapes were resoldered using Sn-Pb alloy. The results using several joint geometries, distinct surface preparation processes and different soldering materials are presented and analysed. The solder alloy with lower melting point and the longer joint length presented the smallest joint resistance.

It is shown that when two frequently detuned pump beams of equal intensity are incident on a BSO crystal, output beams corresponding to higher harmonics and subharmonics of the fundamental grating are produced. It is suggested that in order to explain theoretically all of the observed effects, the higher Fourier terms in the solution of Kukhtarev's equations (1979) must be retained, gratings due to higher harmonic beams must be included and, for the case of the subharmonics, the new amplification mechanism must be used.<<ETX>>

  • Deformation and I<tex>$_rm c$</tex>Degradation Behavior in Bent Bi-2223 Tapes Under Pressurized Liquid Nitrogen

    The Ic degradation behaviors of Bi-2223 superconducting tapes under pressurized liquid nitrogen were investigated using a newly developed sample holder which gives a series of bending strains to a sample. Four kinds of commercially available multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes were used. At atmospheric pressure, the Ic degradation behavior depended upon the reinforcement adopted, the tapes externally reinforced or densified by over pressure showed better bending strain tolerance than the Ag alloy-sheathed Bi-2223 tapes. But these tapes showed a larger Ic degradation when pressurized to 1 MPa in liquid nitrogen. For all samples, after depressurization to atmospheric pressure from 1 MPa, the Ic was completely recovered to its initial values at atmospheric pressure. When the samples were warmed up to room temperature after being depressurized from 1 MPa, ballooning occurred at some parts of some samples. It was found that the larger degradation of Ic occurred at the regions where significant ballooning occurred

  • Block-coil dipole for future hadron colliders

    A first model dipole is being built for a block-coil dipole for future hadron colliders. The design incorporates stress management, in which Lorentz stress is intercepted between successive sections of the coil and bypassed through a support matrix. By controlling stress, the dipole should make it possible to utilize Nb/sub 3/Sn and BSCCO superconductors without strain degradation at high field. The first model dipole is being built using NbTi cable in order to evaluate fabrication techniques and stress management performance.

  • Self-field effects in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks in (Bi,Pb)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub y/ single crystals

    We have studied the features of intrinsic Josephson junction stacks in the c-axis direction in highly Pb-substituted (Bi/sub 1-x/Pb/sub x/)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub y/ (with x/spl ges//spl sim/0.2) single crystals exhibiting multiple branches with hysteresis on the I-J characteristics. For the mesa of the single crystal with x=/spl sim/0.2, as the self-field effects on the fluxon motion in the Intrinsic Josephson junctions, the flux flow branch and the zero field step were successfully observed in addition to the supercurrent at zero voltage and the multiple resistive branches. Moreover, their ac Josephson effect was also confirmed by observation of the microwave-induced Shapiro step. These results imply the existence of intrinsic Josephson effects in the single crystals with x/spl ges//spl sim/0.2.

  • Fabrication and properties of Nb/MgO/Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CaCu/sub 2/O/sub x/ tunnel junctions using crystalline and amorphous MgO films grown by the MBE method

    The properties of tunnel-type junctions have been improved by using the Nb/MgO/Au/BSCCO structure. Tunneling spectroscopy was examined in junctions such as Nb/MgO/BSCCO and Nb/MgO/Au/BSCCO. MgO films for tunnel barriers were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). In a Nb/MgO/BSCCO junction with no Au layer, the superconducting gap parameters, Delta , of BSCCO single crystals with crystalline and amorphous MgO barriers were estimated to be 25 meV and 38 meV, respectively. Nb/MgO/Au/BSCCO junctions with a 20-nm-thick Au layer indicated a clear gap structure induced by the proximity effect at 30 meV. These junction characteristics were confirmed to be closely related to the existence of interdiffusion between BSCCO and other materials.<<ETX>>

  • Characterization of BSCCO/Ag tapes and magnets

    We report results on the critical current density J/sub c/(T,H) at various fields and temperatures of Bi-2223/Ag tapes and small coils. In field measurements on small coils were performed under ascending and descending fields to investigate hysteretic behavior. Strain dependence of J/sub c/ was obtained by bending heat treated tapes around mandrels of varying diameters. Microstructural results of these tapes by optical microscopy, SEM, EDS, WDS are also presented.<<ETX>>

  • Constitutive mechanical modeling of BSCCO powders

    In order to feed a new mechanical model of the Powder In Tube (PIT) processing BSCCO/Ag conductors, a plastically compressible constitutive model of the powder is proposed and its parameters measured. We use a simple compressible model of the CAM-CLAY type with work hardening and softening depending on density variation. The unknown parameters of the model, the plastic properties of ceramic filaments, were evaluated from experimental studies of the real BSCCO powder by estimating the yield surface at a given density.
