  • Research directions in multimedia systems

The growth of the availability and use of multimedia systems in the next few years is likely to be enormous. The market, initially driven by consumers wishing stand alone systems with multimedia capabilities mainly for games, will extend rapidly into the requirement for truly integrated and networked multimedia systems. The driving force for this, as we are already seeing, is the availability of the Internet and world wide web (WWW) and the plans to provide networking to every home and workplace. The challenge for researchers in multimedia systems is how the stand alone systems can be transparently integrated with a wide number of different type of networks ranging from those providing high speed multi services to slower wireless based systems supporting mobile systems. In addition to the research into protocols to support such systems there is considerable research to be done in the provision of tools that allow the end user to take of advantage of the services offered. For example the need for intelligent browsers. This research will only be successful if a number of researchers from different areas are brought together. The author outlines some important areas that still need addressing. The main assumption made is that multimedia systems of the future will be distributed.

  • Quality issues in future multimedia systems: An overview

The paper presents the collection of slides which deals with the quality issues in future multimedia systems. It discusses about quality of service, video quality, audio quality and quality measurements and its application in IPTV, DTV broadcast such as DVB-T, DVB-H, and DVB-T2.

  • Using ESTEREL for building synchronization mechanisms in multimedia systems

This paper shows how the formal specification language ESTEREL may be efficiently used in the development of multimedia systems. We cover the specification and validation of a lip-synchronization mechanism. Modeling of this mechanism lends to a relative simple specification which confirms the simplification of reasoning about real-time systems related to the synchrony hypothesis. Several results obtained by simulation allowed a performance evaluation of the mechanism under different quality of service requirements.

  • Research of a Class of Multimedia Systems

A result of global asymptotic stability of a class of multimedia systems is given by means of the analysis and computing method.

  • Multimedia systems in a changing technology landscape

Summary form only given. Multimedia systems are typically computation intensive. Ever more complex algorithms and the continuous increasing resolution suggest that this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Silicon IC technology scaling delivers the required transistor densities to meet the computational needs of multimedia systems, however, at an ever increasing cost. Changes in the technology landscape influence multimedia systems architectures, resulting in design challenges and opportunities. In this presentation we provide a glimpse of this technology-design interaction in the context of multimedia systems, touching upon multi-core architectures, 3D chip-stacking, and embedded MEMS technology.

  • Minimizing Security Threats in Multimedia Systems

This paper describes security enhancement of multimedia data using steganography. The proposed method is based on a new method of embedding ASCII text characters into moderatory bits of IEEE standard multimedia images, which are used as cover media. Simulation results for peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (MSE) for text data embedding into different moderatory bit positions are presented. It is shown that the proposed method of data embedding offers superior robustness against external attacks as compared to LSB insertion technique without compromising the perceptual quality of the host multimedia image. Therefore our proposed method can find potential use in security enhancement of multimedia image
