  • Evolved Multimedia Broadcasting and Multicasting Services in LTE-A Using Device to Device Communication

    With the rapid growth in data services including multimedia downloading, video conferencing, live streaming and mobile TV in the last few years, there has been increased demand of LTE broadcasting. However, there are many challenges in this area and one of the biggest problems occurs when several users subscribe to the same multimedia service. Then it becomes inefficient to transmit the same content multiple times to subscribers via unicast. This problem is aggravated when the number of users coming in between the multicast session is huge. In order to overcome this, dynamic scenario is proposed that incorporates Device-to-Device (D2D) communication along with Multimedia Broadcasting and Multicasting Services of LTE. This is achieved by integrating multicasting and D2D communication between the users. The performance of static as well as dynamic scenario is compared on various metrics. In addition to this, performance of various device discovery protocols supporting this model has been analyzed and compared with static scenario.

In this paper, a suggested SFN structure for DTMB without SIP insertion is proposed. The performance is shown through the simulation and Lab test results.

  • Optimal Combination of H.264/AVC Coding Tools for Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting Application

    Through experiments on combinations of coding tools included in H.264/AVC, we obtain an optimal combination of coding tools for the mobile multimedia broadcasting application. Although H.264/AVC has defined several profiles and levels for different applications, the partitions are still imprecise. The mobile communication network is usually with limited bandwidth and different kinds of fading and multipath interference. The mobile terminals with downlink video service in the broadcasting network are battery restricted and low processing power. Considering of these features, the proposal has made an optimal selection of the coding tools in H.264/AVC for the mobile multimedia broadcasting application. This set of tools makes a good balance among compression efficiency, transmission robustness and decoding complexity, therefore provides reliable quality for mobile multimedia broadcasting service.

  • Cavity-backed slot antenna array for the repeater system of a satellite digital multimedia broadcasting service

    For the repeater system of the satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service (2630/spl sim/2655 MHz) requiring a high-gain antenna and enough isolation between antennas, a cavity-backed slot antenna array (CBSAA) fed by a single waveguide is proposed to suppress side lobe level (SLL) and to increase front-to-back ratio (FBR). The SLL and FBR are enhanced with an optimized magnitude ratio of the electric field at each slot and an additional vertical reflector. The measured SLLs in the H- and E-planes are under -33.24 and -35.78 dB, respectively. An FBR over 37.84 dB and a peak gain over 17 dBi are measured. The proposed CBSAA consists of 2 /spl times/ 4 slot elements backed by a single cavity and has the characteristics of high power handling capability, high radiation efficiency, low feed line loss, and simple feed network.

  • A 90nm 512Kb embedded Phase-Change Memory macro with fast read access time for digital multimedia broadcasting applications

    This paper presents an embedded Phase-Change Memory (ePCM) macro with 10ns fast read access time. The ePCM macro achieves a fast read access time by introducing a novel pre-charge technique, differential array configuration, and fast sensing technique. The ePCM macro is realized in a 1mm<sup>2</sup> silicon area where a 90nm CMOS technology is used.

  • A high performance and low power consumption USB DMB receiver

    A low power USB DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) receiver with small size and high performance is reported. The receiver can be plugged in PC via USB port and play the DMB programs through a DMB player software installed on PC. The receiver is designed on a 2-layer PCB board with a small size of 59 mm * 23 mm. Test results showed that the receiver can achieve -99.5 dBm receiving sensitivity and consume only 55 mA current for 384 kbps DMB video receiving and 38 mA for 128 kbps DMB audio receiving. These features make it a suitable solution for portable DMB receiver, especially for laptop-based DMB receiver.
