This paper analyzes deeply that how to extend the common format to meet the needs of applications in smart substation and compatibility of currently- executing standard common format. This research has reference significance for data exchange in smart substation when the new version of COMTRADE has not been issued.

  • COMTRADE: a new standard for common format for transient data exchange

    A new IEEE standard developed by the IEEE PES Power System Relaying Committee is described. It is intended for use by digital-computer-based devices which generate or collect transient data from electric power systems. The standard should facilitate exchange of the transient data for the purpose of simulation, testing, validation, or archival storage. An overview of the IEEE Standard (C37.111), which should be referred to for a full description of the types and structures of the data files, is provided. The COMTRADE standard specifies a common format for transient data exchange. This format will be used by people needing to send power system transient data originating in one format to someone else who uses a different format.<<ETX>>

  • COMTRADE-Based Fault Information System for TNB Substations

    This paper describes the process of extracting the fault information from common format for transient data exchange (COMTRADE) record. The COMTRADE format record was obtained from the distance relay recording device, provided by the Protection Department of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). A graphical user interface (GUI) simulation program using MATLAB was developed which implements the one-cycle cosine filter relaying algorithm to digitally filter out the unwanted signals at system's fundamental frequency from the COMTRADE record. This work aims to help the TNB protection engineer to have a faster solution in parameter extraction from protective relay recorded from substations in COMTRADE format.

    This paper demonstrates how to commission specific protection functions using COMTRADE-an IEEE standard for common format for transient data exchange. The following are required to generate a specific test: (1.) detailed test plan (2.) COMTRADE records <sup>1</sup>Each detailed test plan should provide a complete explanation of the test as well as step-by-step instructions on performing the test. Each detailed test plan should also provide an explanation as to why the test is useful to perform, such as preventing a common type of misoperation from re-occurring. Some functional tests may only require a COMTRADE record to inject test signals into the relay. Tests that can be performed using a generic COMTRADE record greatly simplify the test plan and can provide test results based upon actual system conditions.

  • COMTRADE / PQDIF Conversion

    The IEEE has two standards that are capable of representing waveform data gathered by fault recorders, protective relays, power quality meters and similar devices for the purpose of electronic information exchange. Although there is some overlap between the two in their application space, both standards have been optimized for different purposes. Even so, there often is a need to convert data from one format to the other for the data types that both are capable of representing. This paper discusses the issues associated with those conversions
