  • A Study in Knowledge Ontology Building in the Area of Knowledge Engineering

    Ontologies, as a kind of content of semantics resources in the construction of knowledge engineering, have entered into the stage of practical study. The study have discussed the difference between the concept of knowledge in the area of knowledge engineering and the meaning of "being" in Ontology. In this study, how to understand the meaning of knowledge in the area of knowledge engineering was discussed from the restrictions of description of Ontology. The relations between the knowledge, knowledge engineering and ontologies are concerned from the views of understanding the ontologies in the area of computer intelligence. The study suggests that the methods of construction should be different for the three types of knowledge, known, discussing and unknown. And the most important and typical attentions are concluded according to the features of knowledge ontologies of domain, task and application in this paper.

  • Expert Education-using knowledge engineering to teach science

    It is shown how knowledge engineering's pedagogical potential was exploited by engaging junior-high-school students in an expert system project at Trinity College. Serving as knowledge engineers, the students developed an expert system for identifying tree species. Project evaluation indicates that students mastered target knowledge. Also, they enjoyed taking a somewhat different approach to this standard junior-high-school subject. The success of the experiment supports the view that knowledge engineering should be considered as an innovative approach for teaching scientific subjects and improving independent learning skills.<<ETX>>

  • Designing multidisciplinary capstone courses — A knowledge engineering approach

    The design and implementation of multidisciplinary capstone courses are treated as knowledge engineering activities, where IEEE STD 1471 and ISO/IEC 42010 help to address all stakeholders' concerns on different subject domains, varying viewpoints, and robust architecture. Storyboarding and metrics capture are utilized to integrate different stakeholders and their interest. As a consequence, outcome assessment becomes an integral part of knowledge engineering activities in a capstone course design.

  • Advantage of DMS design approach using knowledge engineering

    Distribution management system has been implemented and utilized by utilities around the world to support the system operators in their decision making process especially when emergencies occur in the distribution system. The system can vary from utility to utility due to the complexity of each system. This inevitably leads to the importance of the Distribution Management System design in order to get the system life cycle assessment. This paper presents an advantage of using a knowledge engineering technique along with knowledge management theory as an alternative approach in designing the Distribution Management System for Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Thailand. The results of this paper show that knowledge engineering technique is suitable to solve the designing problems of the Distribution Management System. Furthermore, this framework can also help utility capture, utilize and update their existing knowledge in designing their own system. Moreover, the comparison with consultant study is also introduced.

  • Methods for knowledge engineering in the development of a computerized admission testing system (CATS)

    The authors developed an expert system for routine tests ordered when an adult patient is admitted to the general medicine services of a hospital. They describe the methods for knowledge engineering used to develop a computerized admission testing system (CATS). CATS was developed in successive iterations guided by expert input on discordant results. The methods illustrate the innovative use of quantitative measures of discordance to direct the knowledge engineering process.<<ETX>>
