Alternative structural colours are produced from periodic wavelength-scale-sized transparent components, and thus are benign, longlived, and possess new optical features. The authors create polymer photonics crystals made of cross-linked polymer spheres dispersed in a soft elastomeric matrix, using a novel industrially- scalable shear-based nano-assembly. Simply tuning the size of the spheres changes the colour across the entire visible spectrum, while optimised shearing creates single-domain opal films. The authors demonstrate a wide variety of new optical properties based on the resonant scattering phenomena.

  • Low power nanophotonics and its applications in data centers

    The evolution of future Data Centers requires novel means of information transmission due in part to the energy dissipated in the transport of information. Photonics in the form of active optical cables is used for both inter-rack as well as intra-rack connections. However, due to the superior bandwidth-density properties of photonics over copper based transmission, photonics is now being considered for inter-chip and even intra-chip interconnects. This requires novel approaches to create smaller (nanoscale), lower power dissipation functional devices in the transmission fabric, a development that could also be useful for a range of other applications. The current status as well as the prospects to achieve these ends and to take the next quantum leap in integrated nanophotonics are discussed.

  • Optical NEMS Based Force Sensor Using Silicon Nanophotonics

    A line defect in a silicon two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystal (PhC) is created as a waveguide for light propagation via the PhC. By introducing micro-cavities within the line defect so as to form the resonant band gap structure for PhC, we demonstrate a PhC waveguide (PhCWG) filter with clear resonant peak in output wavelength spectrum. We conceptualized a novel nanomechanical beam structure embedded with this PhCWG filter, i.e., a NEMS (Nanoelectromechanical system) based force sensor. Since the output resonant wavelength is sensitive to the shape of air holes and defect length of the micro-cavity. Shift of the output resonant wavelength is correlated with beam deformation or force loading for this free-standing PhCWG beam. Simply speaking, the induced strain modifies the shape of air holes and the spacing among them for micro-cavities along the silicon waveguide of PhCWG For a silicon PhCWG beam structure with dimension of 340 nm(thickness) x 5 mum(width) x 20 mum(length), the measurable vertical deformation of 20-25 nm at the center and detectable strain of defect length of 0.004% is derived according to simulation results.

    The metallic nano-tip used in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy strongly enhances and confines light to realize super-high spatial resolution far beyond the diffraction limit. This enables us to study a variety of physical, chemical and biological properties of a sample at nanoscale.

  • Circulant preconditioning in the volume integral equation method for nanophotonics

    Wave propagation problems arising in nanophotonics can be considered high frequency, however typically this high frequency behavior is confined to one main propagation direction. It is well known that EM solvers employing iterative methods are slow to converge for high-frequency problems and thus require effective preconditioners. Here we employ a frequency-domain volume integral equation method based on a voxelized discretization. This leads to a three-level Toeplitz system. We make a circulant approximation to this matrix along only the long dimension and show that this proves to be an extremely effective preconditioner for a range of nanophotonics problems.
