  • Kinetic-based micro energy-harvesting for wearable sensors

    Wearable sensors are considered to be a key component of cognitive infocommunications systems. These sensors, which are basically enabler of inter-cognitive communication, will provide physical interfaces between humans and future information and communication technology (ICT) devices. Due to their small size, such sensors are often powered by small batteries which might necessitate frequent recharge or even sensor replacement. Energy harvesting can reduce the charging frequency of these sensors. Longer operational lifetime can simplify the everyday use of wearable sensors in many of their applications. In this paper, our objective is to estimate the average amount of kinetic energy that can be harvested to power a wearable device. To obtain this estimate, we have measured typical acceleration of the human body through the use of a triaxial accelerometer placed at various locations on the body surface. These locations are assumed to be associated with the typical placement of a wearable sensor. Using the mathematical model of a micro energy-harvester, instantaneous harvested power can be generated, and target statistics such as average power can be calculated. Our preliminary results show that kinetic-based micro harvesters could be a promising technology for prolonging the operational lifetime of wearable sensors.

  • A telemedicine service platform exploiting BT/BLE wearable sensors for remote monitoring of chronic patients

    This paper presents a telemedicine hardware/software platform for data acquisition, communication, processing, presentation and storage, aimed to remotely monitor lifestyle, vital signs and in general the clinical status of patients affected by chronic diseases. Such platform is useful to support an innovative ICT-based application of the Chronic Care Model (CCM). The platform exploits wearable sensors, a BT/BLE connectivity to the local gateway and then a connection, using standard formats and cyber-secure protocols, to a server- based application and repository. The platform allows clinicians and practitioners to realize aggravations and act promptly, before they become irreversible and lead to hospitalization. The system also implements data analysis, by processing multiple parameters in parallel. As well as monitoring the state of health, the proposed telemedicine platform can be also used to monitor the emotional and psychological state of the patient.

  • Using wearable sensors to measure motor abilities following stroke

    Motor abilities of stroke survivors are often severely affected. Post-stroke rehabilitation is guided by the use of clinical assessments of motor abilities. Clinical assessment scores can be predicted by models based on features extracted from the wearable sensor data. Wearable sensors would allow monitoring of subjects in the home and provide accurate assessments to guide the rehabilitation process. We propose the use of a wearable sensor system to assess the motor abilities of stroke victims. Preliminary results from twelve subjects show the ability of this system to predict clinical scores of motor abilities

  • Monitoring mobile patients using predictive analysis by data from wearable sensors

    Nowadays, we know health has to be given more attention as due to hybrid food, changing environment and many other factors many health problems are arising; which has lead the researchers to pay attention to healthcare monitoring systems. As many patients are hospitalized, monitoring them continuously is a bit tedious task. So some technique should be implemented to ease our task so we are proposing predictive monitoring technique to develop reliable patient monitoring system so that healthcare professionals can monitor their patient continuously by using wearable patient monitors. The proposed system uses sensors, the data acquisition unit, microcontroller (ie. Arduino) and software. This system is able to send alarm messages about the patient's critical health data by text messages or by email reports. By using this information the healthcare professional can provide necessary medical advising. Thus the proposed system removes some drawbacks of existing system and provides a reliable health monitoring system which will monitor health parameters such as ECG, RR, HR, BP and BG.

  • Use of skin resistance to detect steady-state rest condition in a subject during cardiovascular measurements

    Currently there is no established approach to identify the steady-state rest condition of a subject during the baseline recording in cardiovascular experiments. In this study we investigated the possibility to use the skin resistance (SR) signal to obtain such an information in a simple way. SR is known to be related to the sympathetic activity and to the level of relaxation of the subject but its magnitude may largely varies among subjects. Thus to identify the steady-state rest condition in a given subject, we need a sort of "SR calibration curve" from which the phase of stable relaxation could be easily identified. In this paper we propose a simple experimental set up aimed at creating such a "calibration curve". This approach required a modification of the traditional scheme of the hardware used for SR measurement and the definition of an ad-hoc experimental protocol in which SR could be evaluated while the subject is under stress and during relaxation. Application of this procedure on 15 subjects showed that in 12 subjects the proposed experimental set up allowed obtaining SR curves characterized by similar shapes which all included a clear fiducial point indicating the zone of stable relaxation.

  • Non-Invasive Flexible and Stretchable Wearable Sensors With Nano-Based Enhancement for Chronic Disease Care

    Advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, functional nanomaterials, and micro/nano manufacturing have been made in recent years. These advances have accelerated the development of wearable sensors. Wearable sensors, with excellent flexibility, stretchability, durability, and sensitivity, have attractive application prospects in the next generation of personal devices for chronic disease care. Flexible and stretchable wearable sensors play an important role in endowing chronic disease care systems with the capability of long-term and real-time tracking of biomedical signals. These signals are closely associated with human body chronic conditions, such as heart rate, wrist/neck pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and biofluids information. Monitoring these signals with wearable sensors provides a convenient and non- invasive way for chronic disease diagnoses and health monitoring. In this review, the applications of wearable sensors in chronic disease care are introduced. In addition, this review exploits a comprehensive investigation of requirements for flexibility and stretchability, and methods of nano-based enhancement. Furthermore, recent progress in wearable sensors-including pressure, strain, electrophysiological, electrochemical, temperature, and multifunctional sensors-is presented. Finally, opening research challenges and future directions of flexible and stretchable sensors are discussed.

  • Mobile application and wearable sensors for use in cognitive behavioral therapy for drug addiction and PTSD

    We present a mobile system for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) developed for an ongoing study for patients with drug-addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The mobile platform consists of two parts: a wearable sensor system for collecting algorithm training data in the lab, and a mobile phone application used to deliver therapeutic interventions as triggered by real-time sensor data. Ecological momentary assessments (EMA) are also used as a means of collecting subjective data and validating the sensor classification algorithm. We provide a brief description of the wearable sensors, mobile phone software and network architecture used in the study.
