    An uninterruptible power supply is the most important part of the Data Center, linking between the main power supply and end sensitive load, to provide imperative protection against power disruptions. The main UPS preferred choices for protecting critical loads in Data Center are (Double Conversion Online UPS and Flywheel UPS system). But for the Data Center managers and operators selecting the right UPS for deployment can be a difficult proposition. Therefore this paper aims to provide a clearer understanding of key factors and considerations involved in selecting the right UPS system in terms of efficiency and cost. In order to clear these concerns a comparison made between Double Conversion Online UPS and Flywheel UPS system in a model of a medium size Data Center designed to provide 1500kW of cooling capacity to the Data Halls and hence support 1500kW of IT load. The electrical infrastructure topology to be adopted is `N+1' parallel redundancy configuration for each type of the UPS systems technologies.

The UPS system is an alternate or backup source of power linking between mains power supply and end critical loads in order to provide back-up power and protection for the sensitive load. This study attempts to answer the question of how can future UPS topology and technology improve the efficiency of Data Center. In order to analyze the impact of different UPS technologies and their operating efficiencies, a model for a medium size Data Centre is developed, and load schedules and worked schematics were created to analyze and test the components of each of the UPS system topologies.

    A three-phase series-parallel compensated line-interactive UPS system consisting of two voltage-source inverters controlled separately by two digital signal processors is studied in this paper. According to international IEEE standards, AC UPS system can be classified into three of a kind, i.e. passive-standby, line-interactive and double-conversion. Why this kind of UPS system is often called "delta-conversion", which is a member of the line- interactive UPS family in nature, may lie in a little power bandied by both inverters in standby mode and the quasi-feedback PWM technique it adopted. "Delta-inverter" can be controlled either as AC fundamental sinusoidal current source or as nonsinusoidal voltage source to compensate harmonic voltage at the utility, while "main-inverter" can be controlled either as AC constant- voltage constant-frequency fundamental sinusoidal voltage source or as nonsinusoidal current source to compensate reactive and harmonic currents deriving from inductive and nonlinear loads. Compared to double-conversion counterpart, "delta-inverter" is of a small kilo-volt-ampere rating in any modes, while a little reactive and harmonic currents flow through "main- inverter" in standby mode. Thus, the efficiency and reliability of this kind of UPS are both increased with reduced cost. Some simulation waveforms and partial experimental oscillograms are shown in detail to verify the theoretic analysis.

  • Application of eco Mode UPS in data center

    Eco mode UPS will power the load with mains power supply directly when the quality of mains power supply is good. When the quality of mains power supply decreases Eco mode UPS will switch to double conversion mode rapidly to meet the requirement of power quality. Eco mode UPS has the highest efficiency and the highest reliability. Using Eco mode UPS is an important measure of data center energy saving, which can improve the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of data center. This paper evaluates the performance of Eco mode UPS, analyzes the high efficiency and high reliability of Eco mode UPS, and describes the application consideration of Eco mode UPS.

  • Three of a kind [UPS topologies, IEC standard]

    With uninterruptible power supplies now used in critical applications across every industrial sector, a standard terminology to describe types and performance measures has become essential. The author outlines how the international standards community has responded to this need by introducing IEC 62040-3 which distinguishes three types of UPS topology: passive standby, line interactive, and double conversion. These three topologies are described. For low power ratings (less than 2 kVA) all three topologies, as defined by the standards, are used. For medium to high power ratings, the case for the passive standby and the line interactive is, at best, marginal, in spite of their significantly lower cost. The vast majority of sales to medium to high- power rating applications are represented by double conversion UPSs (95% from a few kVA upwards; 98% above 10 kVA). The dominance of the double-conversion topology is attributable to its almost total lack of weaknesses, combined with the capacity to meet the needs of sensitive loads at these power ratings-a consequence of UPS being connected in series with the utility power sources.

  • IoT-Based UPS Monitoring System Using MQTT Protocols

    Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) monitoring system using message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol is a solution to solve UPS monitoring issues in a large infrastructure. This paper discusses the proof of the small size of message data by using the MQTT protocol on IoT-based communications. Based on IoT concept, the system described in this paper used Arduino microcontroller connected to the Internet via an Ethernet shield. The system used MQTT as a communication protocol that was designed for a lightweight communication. This system was intended to display UPS monitoring data in real-time on a web page stored on raspberry pi which roles as a web server, MQTT broker, MQTT subscriber and database. UPS parameter could be monitored using a web-based application. There were some differences in data obtained from sensor with the measurement results of measuring instruments specified for each parameter: the difference of input voltage was equal to 0.20%, while differences of output voltage, output power and output current reached 1.34%, 0.17% and 20%, respectively.

  • Ring Bus Architecture with Static UPS for Critical Power Applications

    Mission critical applications require UPS for power conditioning and back-up, and multiple UPS units may be combined in redundant architectures to maximize reliability. However, both upfront investment as well as operating costs are penalized by the required deployment of excess capacity.So-called Iso-parallel or Ring Bus architecture employing rotary UPS systems is a cost effective and efficient alternative. This paper discusses the extension of such concept, proposing the deployment of static UPS in Ring Bus arrangement.First, rotary and static UPS topologies and associated characteristics are reviewed. Then, the Ring Bus architecture and associated load sharing technique is detailed. Finally, the paper focuses on handling of fault scenarios, as the main challenge with using static UPS is their limited fault current capability. Overcoming such limitation unlocks the benefit of static UPS deployment in Ring Bus systems.
