  • Are we managing the risk of sharing cyber situational awareness? A UK Public Sector case study

    The development of effective cyber situational awareness, that makes a significant contribution to the decision making process around information risk management, is an important goal for organizations across all sectors. The sharing of such information between and within organizations is seen as a key security enabler. This paper considers a case study of a UK Public Sector organization. The aim is to establish if the decision to share cyber situational awareness has been taken from an information risk management perspective, and to examine whether or not the organization is suitably well- placed, to manage the consequences of information loss, occurring as a result of the sharing process.

  • Enhancing Cyber Situational Awareness: A New Perspective of Password Auditing Tools

    Password auditing can enhance the cyber situational awareness of defenders, e.g. cyber security/IT professionals, with regards to the strength of text- based authentication mechanisms utilized in an organization. Auditing results can proactively indicate if weak passwords exist in an organization, decreasing the risks of compromisation. Password cracking is a typical and time-consuming way to perform password auditing. Given that defenders perform password auditing within a specific evaluation timeframe, the cracking process needs to be optimized to yield useful results. Existing password cracking tools do not provide holistic features to optimize the process. Therefore, the need arises to build new password auditing toolkits to assist defenders to achieve their task in an effective and efficient way. Moreover, to maximize the benefits of password auditing, a security policy should be utilized. Currently the efforts focus on the specification of password security policies, providing rules on how to construct passwords. This work proposes the functionality that should be supported by next-generation password auditing toolkits and provides guidelines to drive the specification of a relevant password auditing policy.

  • Towards a theoretical framework for an active cyber situational awareness model

    While the mechanism and scope of cyberspace is progressing on a daily basis, risk factors and the ability to process cyberspace data in less time and using less effort are proving to be major roadblocks to achieve the desired outcomes. The defensive methods currently applied to counter these evolving attacks are not sufficient due to their preventive and reactive nature so an active posture is required. The passive natures of existing Situational Awareness (SA) models imply that they cannot enhance cyber SA in a world where there are new developments every day. The research activity in this paper focused on defining a new approach towards ensuring cyber security. We propose an Active Situational Awareness Model (ASAM) as a theoretical model that enhances the quality of cyber situational awareness. The model proposes a concept that conforms to the military stratagems of Sun Tzu, where operators always engage attackers directly by deploying active intelligence-gathering techniques in order to create new knowledge.

Appropriate data analysis techniques, in combination with modern anomaly detection output data and user knowledge, may provide solutions in real-time that could replace human input for many situational awareness analysis tasks.

We show that this new method, referred to as machine learning situational awareness analyses, is efficient in situational perceiving, main contribution of this paper is to further integration of the fuzzy reasoning and situational risk control strategies to cyberspace security analysis.

  • The role of service oriented architecture in battlefield situational awareness

    The paper studies situational awareness, one of the most important factors of network centric warfare. It focuses on the role of service oriented architecture and how it can help generating a more extensive and comprehensive situational awareness. To clarify the point, service oriented common tactical/operational picture as the visual aspect of situational awareness and non-visual shared information are analyzed and novel strategies are proposed to improve the emergent results. Finally the paper reviews a scenario in which situational awareness is generated over a loosely coupled environment for various kinds of service consumers.

  • Lane-level localization based on situational awareness on highway

    This paper presents a lane-level localization algorithm based on situational awareness fusing radar, vision, GPS, and digital map on highway. Under the assumption that the maximum number of lanes is known by both GPS and digital map, the position of a vehicle is determined in a term of lane-level position via situational awareness on highway. The situational awareness aims at recognizing maneuver of the vehicle, guardrail, and surrounding vehicles. By fusion radar and vision sensors, it is proposed that the lane-level position can be determined inferring all outputs of situational awareness. The proposed algorithm is validated experimentally via field test data.

  • Improving situational awareness of cyber physical systems based on operator's goals

    This paper focuses on discovering the key areas of Situational Awareness (SA) and Common Operational Picture (COP) in two different environments: the monitoring room and dismounted forces operations in urban areas. The research is based on scientific publications and on two implemented environments. In urban area warfare, the Mobile Urban Area Situational Awareness System is used to evaluate the requirements and usage of dismounted troops. The monitoring room is studied using the Situational Awareness of Critical Infrastructure and Networks System. These empirical environments were implemented during research projects at the Finnish National Defence University. The paper presents a model combining the joint model of laboratories, Endsley's model of SA and the results of goal-driven task analysis for creating a service-based architecture for defining and sharing COP. The main SA model used is Endsley's level model. It has been supplemented with cyber-related perspectives and fits the selected environments well, allowing techniques that can be used to measure the SA level and define the actor's most important goals.

  • Comprehensive analysis of network security situational awareness methods and models

    The research of Network security situational awareness (NSSA) is very important because it can improve the network monitoring abilities, Emergency response capacity and predict the development trend of network security.   • Enhancing situational awareness by means of hybrid adaptive neural control of vertical flight in unmanned helicopter

    This paper focuses on a critical component of the situational awareness, the neural control of autonomous vertical flight for an unmanned aerial vehicle. Autonomous vertical flight is a challenging but important task for tactical unmanned aerial vehicles to achieve high level of autonomy under adverse conditions. The fundamental requirement for vertical flight is the knowledge of the height above the ground, and a properly designed controller to govern the process. With the situational awareness strategy, we proposed a two stage flight control procedure using two adaptive neural networks to address the dynamics variation and performance requirement difference in initial and final stages of flight trajectory for a nontrivial small-scale helicopter model comprising five states, two inputs and two outputs. This control strategy for chosen helicopter model has been verified by simulation of descending and landing manoeuvres using software package Simulink and demonstrated good performance for fast situational awareness in real-time search-and-rescue operations.
