  • The impedance matrix localization (IML) method for moment-method calculations

    The impedance matrix localization (IML) method, a modification of the standard method of moments that can be implemented as a modification to existing computer programs, is examined. This modification greatly eases the excessive storage requirements and long computation times of moment-method approaches by using novel bases and testing function that localize the important interactions to only a small number of elements within the impedance matrix elements can be made so small (typically 10/sup -4/ to 10/sup -6/ in relative magnitude) that they may be approximated by zero. In the case of a two- dimensional body with unknowns on its surface, both analytical arguments and numerical calculations suggest that, for an N*N matrix, about 100N matrix elements will need to be kept, even for very large N. The resulting sparse matrix requires storage for only 100N complex numbers rather than for N/sup 2/ numbers. Similar results are expected in three dimensions. The structure of the resulting matrix problem allows the use of highly efficient solution methods. Results are given for one such possibility: iteration preconditioned by incomplete LU decomposition.<>

    Regenerated gratings seeded by type I gratings withstand temperatures beyond 1000°C. A new approach to increasing temperature resistance of ultra high T stable gratings is presented.

  • Novel beam scanning technique for circularly-polarized reflector antennas

    This paper introduces a new technique for scanning circularly-polarized (CP) beams in reflector antennas. The technique explores the intrinsic properties associated with crosspolarization (XPOL) and beam squint in offset parabolic reflectors. Furthermore the beams are scanned while keeping the whole reflector system focused throughout the scanning process, thus reducing degradations commonly encountered in other procedures. Preliminary numerical results indicate the viability of the proposed procedure over limited scan regions (e.g., /spl plusmn/2/spl deg/), which suggests its use in space applications.

  • Processing of materials and waste streams by electron and ion beams

    Summary form only given. The use of electron beams on an industrial scale is well-established. Some 700 accelerators with electron energies ranging from 0.12 to 16 MeV are producing a wide range of products (none of which are radioactive) based largely on polymer crosslinking, sterilization of biomedical supplies and curing of coatings. Of the three categories, only the last involves major energy savings. The main benefits associated with the other two categories are product properties not readily obtained by competitive methods. When compared with canning and refrigeration, radiation preservation of food (as yet to be adopted on a wide scale), offers prospects of enormous energy savings. Radiation treatment of sewage sludge and waste water have had some minor triumphs. Simultaneous removal of NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ from flue gases by electron irradiation has been demonstrated; the potential market for powerful accelerators required for this field is many hundreds. A wide range of environmental problems ranging from organic chlorides in drinking water to military wastes (biological, nuclear and chemical) are the subject of research programs based on electron processing. Attention is also directed to the recent development of several ingenious products based on high energy ion beams (>10 MeV/nucleon) including "smart" porous membranes and organic nonlinear optical devices.

  • An Algorithm of Coalition Structure Generation with Given Required Bound Based on Cardinality Structure

    Coalition formation is a key topic in multi- agent systems. How to do a further search after the lowest two levels of the coalition structure graph is a problem which hasn't been resoled for a long time. The paper analyzes the relations among cardinality structures deeply and presents an algorithm to improve the current best one of Shexiong Su and Shanli Hu et al's. It not only perfects its solution of for the case mgesh and analyzes how to do away with some redundant search to decrease the demanded searching number further, and gives the proof of the related result.

  • Inversion of sparse MoM matrices without fill in

    This paper describes some new methods for the efficient factorization of sparse representations of moment method matrices. Previous work has described how a general moment method matrix may be transformed into a sparse matrix. The large off diagonal elements in that matrix described physical interactions between modes (e.g. between basis and testing functions) that interact strongly over a long distance. Other modes were created that interact very weakly over long distances, resulting in many small matrix elements and in a sparse matrix. The use of these new modes transformed a full moment method matrix Z into a sparse matrix T.

  • Quick address detection of anomalous memory cells in a flash memory test structure

    A novel scheme for quick address detection of anomalous memory cells having the highest and lowest threshold voltages in a flash memory test structure is described. A test structure with a large memory cell array has been developed to evaluate reliability of flash memory cells before fabrication of a new generation of flash memory devices. In this test structure, each terminal branch of a tree-structured column selector is connected to each bitline of the array. And a simple threshold voltage distribution monitor circuit (VTDM) which we have already proposed is connected to the other end of the bitlines. A proposed Multi-Address Scanning Scheme (MASS) is performed by the tree- structured column selector with monitoring the output of VTDM. The detection time has been reduced to 1.12% in the case of 2048 columns. This novel scheme is suitable for performing reliability tests, such as program/erase endurance test and data retention test.

  • Stable CW sinlge-mode photonic crystal fibre DFB ring laser

    We demonstrate stable single-mode CW operation of a DFB ring laser based on Er3+ doped photonics crystal fibre. The incorporation of a ring cavity allows one single mode to lase and also suppresses the unwanted effect of self- pulsing.

  • Tracking a person with pre-recorded image database and a pan, tilt, and zoom camera

    This paper proposes a novel tracking strategy that can robustly track a person or other object, within a fixed environment using a pan, tilt, and zoom camera with the help of a pre-recorded image database. We define a set called the minimum camera parameter settings (MCPS) which contains just enough camera states as required to survey the environment for the target. This set of states is used to facilitate tracking and segmentation. The idea is to store a background image of the environment for every camera state in MCPS, thus creating an image database. During tracking camera movements are restricted to states in MCPS (or a version of this set that is augmented to improve smoothness of tracking). Scanning for the target and segmentation of the target from the background are simplified as each current image can be compared with the corresponding pre-recorded background image.
