    Summary form only given. This research was initiated and applied in an area of engineering where tacit knowledge predominates; that of manual assembly planning. In this domain the evaluation and formalization of tacit knowledge is very difficult. Assembly planning is generally undertaken by planning 'experts' who produce plans after studying design data in whatever form. Research at Heriot-Watt University has shown that immersive virtual reality (VR) offers significant potential for the interactive planning of mechanical assemblies. Using this system for gathering assembly intent, a knowledge elicitation methodology was developed in which expert assembly planners' activities were logged while building a virtual assembly. This involved four main stages in its application: definition of the salient component attributes (repertory grid analysis); evaluation of attributes for given components (manual evaluation); recording expert assembly usage data (nonintrusive VR data logging); and generating rules relating the components to specific assembly methods (induction). This paper demonstrates how this novel nonintrusive knowledge acquisition methodology can be applied using immersive virtual environments; implying that, as globalizes technology becomes available, this may be a route to the formalization of company know-how.

  • An alternative PLS algorithm for the monitoring of industrial process

    Partial least squares (PLS) has been developed and established as one of the multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) methods. PLS is designed to identify a parametric regression matrix between the input, or predictor variables and the output, or response variables of the process. With PLS, the regression matrix is determined on the basis of a subset of the predictor variables and thus, PLS is able to reduce the number of variables to be considered. In the paper, an alternative variable reduction method is introduced, which is termed latent variable least squares or LVLS. LVLS identifies the process behavior on the basis of the score models rather than a parametric relationship between the predictor and the response variables. In similar fashion to PLS, LVLS can also be applied to monitor industrial processes. An application study, which relates to a realistic simulation of a fluid catalytic cracking unit, is presented to demonstrate the monitoring aspect of LVLS.

  • A method to determine the required number of neural-network training repetitions

    Conventional neural-network training algorithms often get stuck in local minima. To find the global optimum, training is conventionally repeated with ten, or so, random starting values for the weights. Here we develop an analytical procedure to determine how many times a neural network needs to be trained, with random starting weights, to ensure that the best of those is within a desirable lower percentile of all possible trainings, with a certain level of confidence. The theoretical developments are validated by experimental results. While applied to neural-network training, the method is generally applicable to nonlinear optimization.

  • Optimal Feedback Control of a Batch Polymerization Reactor

    A polymer product is characterized by such properties as number average and weight average molecular weights. This paper describes the closed-loop optimal control of a batch solution polymerization of methylmethacrylate in which the appropriate polymer properties are monitored and necessary feedback corrective action is taken if these properties deviate from the optimal trajectories due to disturbances. The optimal feedback control policies are derived here and their evaluation by simulation of the batch reactor model is presented.
