  • Converging MQTT Resources in ETSI Standards Based M2M Platform

    One of the key challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the integration of heterogeneous technologies and communications solutions. This paper proposes a method to integrate Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol with the ETSI M2M architecture via a new network function called MQTT proxy. The MQTT proxy, on the one side, acts as an MQTT broker to the MQTT clients. While on the other side, it serves as a Gateway Application (GA) for interfacing with the ETSI M2M-compliant architecture, specifically OpenMTC developed by Fraunhofer FOKUS. By the MQTT Proxy, MQTT resources can be converged in the ETSI M2M architecture. Finally, we compare the MQTT Proxy with our previous HTTP Proxy.

    At present, the sharing of open data in any city is importance. The shared data, e.g., flood monitoring data, earthquake data, or traffic data, can be used to improve the way of human life. MQTT, the lightweight messaging protocol based on the publish-subscribe concept, is the most popular protocols used to share these data. There are two elements of MQTT messaging for sharing of any data; topic and message. The first one is used to define which the subscriber are received which data and the data that we need to share are presented in the message element. To share the data with MQTT protocol, MQTT- Topic Naming Criteria of Open Data for Smart Cities (MTNC) was proposed in our previous work. In this paper, we propose MQTT-Topics Management System (MTMS) to manage the topics of the MQTT messages shared by any publisher based on MTNC. The experimental result shows that the proposed system get the high average score of usability, design and the benefits.

For example, students will get notified on their smartwatch with a question related to their location or situation derived from the smartwatch sensor data. The system uses. the PONTE MQTT server and is integrated with Google's Classroom.

  • TMCAS: An MQTT based Collision Avoidance System for Railway networks

    Rail is a convenient, economical, and widely used transport system for transferring passengers and goods all around the world. However, 'Safety' has been one of the most significant concerns of Railway Systems. With the tremendous improvement in the IoT, signaling system, and tracking technologies, the number of train accidents has lowered down over the past few years; still, the numbers are on an alarming level. Most of the current anti- collision systems use the fusion of RFID data, GPS sensor, Inertial Sensors, odometers, etc. to detect the exact position of a train on the track networks and get this data exchanged between the trains and transmitted to the central control room for necessary actions. In this paper, we propose an anti- collision system named “TMCAS” (Train Monitoring and Collision Avoidance System) that uses MQTT protocol to share and exchange position, speed, the signal at danger information between trains and central control room. TMCAS aims to automate train operations and act as a safety enhancement system by ensuring speed control, rear-end and head-on collision avoidance, and signal- at-danger avoidance. The concept and algorithm presented in this paper can be modified to fit into different real-time implementation needs or use cases.

  • IoT-Based UPS Monitoring System Using MQTT Protocols

    Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) monitoring system using message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol is a solution to solve UPS monitoring issues in a large infrastructure. This paper discusses the proof of the small size of message data by using the MQTT protocol on IoT-based communications. Based on IoT concept, the system described in this paper used Arduino microcontroller connected to the Internet via an Ethernet shield. The system used MQTT as a communication protocol that was designed for a lightweight communication. This system was intended to display UPS monitoring data in real-time on a web page stored on raspberry pi which roles as a web server, MQTT broker, MQTT subscriber and database. UPS parameter could be monitored using a web-based application. There were some differences in data obtained from sensor with the measurement results of measuring instruments specified for each parameter: the difference of input voltage was equal to 0.20%, while differences of output voltage, output power and output current reached 1.34%, 0.17% and 20%, respectively.

  • Analysis of vulnerabilities in MQTT security using Shodan API and implementation of its countermeasures via authentication and ACLs

    Among the technologies evolved in the recent years, a remarkable one is the IoT (Internet of Things), wherein the `thing' in IoT could be smart phones, tablets, PCs and almost anything with a sensor on it like cars, people, machines in production plants, jet engines, oil drills, wearable devices and many more objects. A standardized, light-weight, session layer protocol with publish/subscribe architecture widely used for messaging and information exchange among IoT devices is the MQTT (MQ Telemetry Transport) protocol. In this paper, we identify various security loopholes in MQTT, using Shodan API and implementing an experimental setup on a Raspberry Pi as an MQTT Broker and python programs as publisher/subscriber clients. The experimental results with respect to the security issues in this protocol at packet and topic levels were studied and the corresponding security measures, consisting of authentication and authorization techniques (ACLs) were implemented. As a result, the Broker was then found to be immune to such attacks. This paper is a concise study of security inconsistencies in MQTT and its countermeasures.

  • Weather tracking system using MQTT and SQLite

    Every person is enthusiastic in accessing the information about certain place or object remotely and to make the things around them smart using new emerging technologies. This paper mainly focus an implementation of a framework of publishing data from ESP8266 to SQLite data server hosted on Raspberry pi module using MQTT Protocol. Here the sensor is assembled to ESP8266 microcontroller to read the values. A python application is developed to sense the values from sensor and to publish the data to raspberry pi. Now, ESP8266 acts as MQTT client and sensor data is sent to the MQTT broker running on Raspberry pi module. Additionally SQLite data server is also hosted on the Raspberry pi module and the data from the ESP8266 is stored in JSON format. This data from server is formatted using HTML file and the formatted data can be accessed remotely.

  • Study of using MQTT cloud platform for remotely control robot and GPS tracking

    This paper proposed the study of using MQTT cloud platform for remotely control and tracking robot by using GPS module. The system consists of 3 main components: cloud platform, internet connection enabled robot, and control and tracking application, work in conjunction by employed MQTT protocol for 2-ways communication between application and robot. The experiment has been conducted by operator sending command control to the robot and receive GPS data for robot position tracking. The experiment result shows the feasibility of the implementation of MQTT cloud platform into remotely control robot and tracking performs, which results in lower data transmission time due to lower packet size. Also, as the cloud-based system, control can be perform anywhere as long as the system connect to the internet.

  • Correlation analysis of MQTT loss and delay according to QoS level

    MQTT is an open protocol developed and released by IBM. To ensure the reliability of message transmission, MQTT supports three levels of QoS. In this paper, we analyze MQTT message transmission process which consists of real wired/wireless publish client, broker server and Subscribe client. By transmitting messages through 3 levels of QoS with various sizes of payloads, we have captured packets to analyze end-to-end delays and message loss.

  • MQTT Based Air Quality Monitoring System using Node MCU and Node-RED

    This paper present an implementation of MQTT based air quality monitoring system. The air quality measurement device is a hardware using ESP8266 NodeMCU that connects to sensors for measuring temperature, humidity, concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), ozonegas (O3), and PM2.5. The firmware of device makes the device act as a publisher that reads the sensor data and sends them to MQTT Broker. Node-RED is used to be a subscriber that subscribes to receive data from MQTT Broker. With Node-RED, we can easily make a flow to manage and handle received data. Then, Node-RED will send data to the air quality monitoring dashboard which is a responsive web application to display data in gauge, text and chart user interface. In addition, when the value of some data exceed the configured range, Node-RED will send an alarm message via LINE Notify to notify users.
