Systemic principles for Organizational Engineering applied to businesses

Doji Samson Lokku; Kesav Vithal Nori 2011 Annual IEEE India Conference, 2011

As Herbert Simon said, the essence of Engineering is the practice of Design. So also, the essence of Organizational Engineering is the practice of Organizational Design. A science underlying Organizational Engineering would have laws that all organizations should obey or satisfy. From such a science, we could cull out principles that could be used to assert the soundness of an ...

Human Resource Management practices and work environment in China and India

Khusro P. Malik; Areeba Khalid; Habib Awan; Mariam Khan; Wajid Saleem; Hania Saleem Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IE&EM), 2011 IEEE 18Th International Conference on, 2011

Human Resource Management practices are shaped by the work environment and culture of a specific country. "Localized" HR practices also determine, to a large extent, organizational effectiveness. Nevertheless, with present milieu of globalization and internationalization of businesses the pressure to adopt best practices and follow some form of international standards has become the norm. This is especially in the interest ...

Semantic-Based Access Control for Grid Data Resources in Open Grid Services Architecture - Data Access and Integration (OGSA-DAI)

Vineela Muppavarapu; Soon M. Chung 2008 20th IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence, 2008

In this paper, we propose a semantic-based access control method for grid data resources in the open grid services architecture - data access and integration (OGSA-DAI). The OGSA-DAI is an efficient grid-enabled middleware implementation of interfaces and services to access and control data resources (such as files, relational databases and XML databases). However, the identity-based access control in the OGSA-DAI ...

Open System Avionics Architectures

C. Roark; B. Kiczuk IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, 1995

Over the last three years, Open System Avionics Architecture concepts have been addressed by the avionics community as a method for increasing affordability. The Naval Air Systems Command (Nav Air) led Advanced Avionics Architecture and Technology Review team of 1992, followed by the multiservice Avionics Engineering SubBoard (AESB) implementation phase team are two examples. The Perry memo and formation of ...

  • MPEG2 Systems and the Transport over ATM

MPEG-2 (Moving Picture Experts Group - phase 2) and ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) both are key enabling technologies for the emerging infornultion superhighway. MPEG-2 is developed for high-quality general video applications including video on demand, two-way communications, and HDTV (High Definition TV). ATM is a cell relay technology which can provide the flexibility and high-spted needed for networked video services. For the transport of MPEG-2 video/audio over ATM, several issues including timing recovery, bit-error detection/correction, cell-loss detection/correction, and mapping of MPEG-2 bit-streams into ATM cells need to be carefully examined .Currently, these issues are being actively discussed in various forums and standards organizations including ATM Forum, ITU-T SG15. and ISO MPEG. This chapter provides a short tutorial on MPEG-2 systems and ATM, and discusses the issues related to the transport of MPEG-2 video/audio over ATM.

  • Standardized Fiber Optic Transmission SystemsA Synchronous Optical Network View

The deployment of fiber optic systems has drastically altered the complexion of the digital network, and standardization of optical interface parameters has assumed paramount importance. This paper reports on the activities in various standards organizations, with emphasis on a synchronous network proposal which is currently being discussed in the T1 Committee.

  • Laws that Mandate Risk Communication

A number of laws and regulations in the United States mandate risk communication as part of the risk assessment and risk management process. Although these laws run to several volumes, making it difficult for anyone outside of the legal profession to really understand them, those who are communicating risk need to be aware of the laws affecting risk communication efforts and what these laws entail. This chapter highlights some of the major federal laws within the United States and selected international standards. The laws include comprehensive environmental response, compensation, and liability act, emergency planning and community right‐to‐know act, national environmental policy act, occupational safety and health act, and resource conservation and recovery act. Check with federal agencies, state agencies, local governments, national and international standards organizations, and your own organization before beginning a risk communication effort to ensure that you understand and are in compliance with the requirements.

  • Relationship to Software Engineering Standards

This chapter contains sections titled: Standards Organizations Relationships Among ISO 9001, ISO 90003, IEEE 12207, and ISO/IEC 15504 Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI)

  • International Laser Standards

As early as January 1987, the LAA board initiated its involvement with the laser committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In the early 1980s, Germany adopted a standard for the threads on microscope objectives, and proposed that the standard be adopted by the International Organization for Standards. It was the IEC Laser Committee (IEC TC76) that was developing standards for laser eye safety. But there were no standards for the lasers' parameters themselves. In order to implement their integrated market, the Europeans needed standards??-??on literally everything??-??that would facilitate intra-European trade. The LEOMA board was determined not to continue the expensive standards assessment into a fourth year. The board decided to request that the two major laser conferences in the United States??-??CLEO and OPTCON??-??add a standards fee to every exhibitor at those conferences. LEOMA was fortunate to find so quickly the path to successful interaction with the European standards organizations.
