  • APPLICATIONS

This chapter lists some applications of the Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) method. It presents quantitative models for evaluation of disease severity and patient disability using the LSP method. The basic idea is that the LSP method can be used to evaluate medical conditions using general medical criteria, and to customize them according to needs of a specific patient. The chapter shows the use of LSP criteria for evaluation, comparison, and selection of multispecies habitat mitigation projects. The job selection problem is one of the most frequent nontrivial evaluation problems. The chapter examines the home selection problem from two standpoints: home selection using data provided by online real estate (ORE) websites, and home evaluation using personalized evaluation criteria. It also presents samples of typical space management problems, and a survey of major search engines available in 2006 and 10 years later, in 2016.

  • Broadening Employment Horizons: Transferring Proposal Writing Skills from For-Profit to Nonprofit Organizations

When faced with the need to seek employment, technical communicators with expertise in proposal writing may want to extend their job-seeking horizons to nonprofit organizations as potential employers. This chapter is based on the sad but persistent fact that plenty of cutbacks continue to be made in industry and that it is always a good idea to be flexible in the career path. Specifically, the chapter looks at the opportunities existing in nonprofit organizations such as colleges and universities for someone with corporate proposal-writing experience. It makes a number of comparisons and contrasts between nonprofit and industrial proposals, such as their aims, reviews, and editing processes, and points out the different attitudes of corporate and nonprofit colleagues toward proposals. The chapter concludes with the reminder that there are several job titles besides "proposal writer" in the nonprofit sector that nevertheless describe positions involving a significant amount of proposal writing.

  • Withholding Expertise: Career-Limiting Belief #13

As the typical engineer's education process teaches that student's grades are directly related to intelligence and contribution, many engineers join organizations with a mindset that they are in competition with their colleagues. This often shows up as a set of behaviors under the label of withholding information in order to maintain control, influence, and job security. People who display this type of behavior have decided that it is in their best interest to look like an expert to others. This behavior pattern is usually generated from a position of fear, a fear that their position is at risk or that they will not be valued enough. This chapter informs that ultimately, all of those poor beliefs, mindsets, and states affect how the engineer acts at work. Having the confidence to share expertise can do more for the career than withholding information to maintain a false sense of power.

  • Motivating Smart

A manager, for the most part, can only be as productive and creative as his staff. A motivated staff tends to be more productive and creative. A sure way to motivate staff is by genuinely caring about them and building a good rapport with them. This chapter discusses rules which help achieve deftness in Motivating Smart. These rules include: winning loyalty by being loyal; getting credit by not taking credit; and motivating by complimenting. In addition, the success of this soft skill can be enhanced by soft skills like communications smart and people smart.

  • Landing and Acing an Engineering Job Interview

There are always plenty of engineers currently looking for work on LinkedIn. They spend hours searching through the site with no result to show for their efforts. The reason for this, most times, is that they are not using LinkedIn effectively or they are not very familiar with the site and how it works. This chapter presents some specific strategies for leveraging this powerful social media networking tool. The component of LinkedIn that will provide the best chance at landing a job interview is the LinkedIn Groups functionality. The chapter provides some hints for properly leveraging the contacts within a LinkedIn Group. It then offers a few insights to interesting questions or items posed at interviews. The most important thing to remember when facing those types of questions, objections, and concerns is to always be honest. Finally, the chapter shares some guidelines with respect to interview etiquette and attire.

  • Some More Tips for the Would-Be Entrepreneur

This chapter presents some tips for the would-be entrepreneur by presenting a summary of lessons the author has learned from experience and from several talented individuals. Typical exit strategies are acquisition or initial public stock offering (also called?>going public?>). If a person is self- financed, customer-financed, or bootstrapped, his/her exit strategy might not be to exit at all, but instead to create a company that maintains a number of employees in an acceptable lifestyle via lucrative salaries. If the right steps are taken for the long-term growth of the company, he/she will be far more attractive to a responsible prospective acquisition partner. Other tips include having an integrated financial plan and an integrated product/service plan, and practicing integrity of all. Honesty and openness are essential ingredients for dealing with everybody in business: customers, users, employees, colleagues and investors.

  • Career Smart

The principle to being career smart is to pond hop strategically, by following the strategy of finding organizations or positions in which our strength gives us the advantage and opportunity. This chapter gives an example of Timothy Gaithner, treasury secretary under President Obama's first term, who strategically pond hopped, always to a position in which his strength gave him the advantage and opportunity. It defines rules, such as opting to be a big fish in a small pond, and hopping to a more opportune pond at opportune moments, which when practiced can help us achieve deftness in being career smart.

  • Making People Decisions

This chapter focuses on the people decisions related to building and maintaining the competence of the organization's talent base for the sustainability of the organization. All of the issues involve a decision about people. While some may appear to be trivial, on the surface, the consequences can damage an organization's reputation and destroy careers. It should not take years to determine that an employee has not met expectations; it does take courage to resolve situations related to inadequate performance. The decisions concerning employees begins and ends in the human resource (HR) department. Hiring policies and practices originate in the HR department and on occasion with input from managers in the functional departments and subsequently approved by some executive-level committee. Managing involves taking risks and making major decisions with minimal information. As the global economy expands, executives needs to come to terms with succession competence across all organizational units.
