  • Transmission of Gaussian field through a pinhole

    In this paper we present two numerical methods for the calculation of Gaussian field incident on a pinhole. The first method is based on Kirchhoff's Huygens aperture field method and the other on the spectrum of plane wave approach. Numerous calculations proved that Kirchhoff's Huygens method is faster and gives accurate results in the Fraunchofer region. The plane wave spectrum is the only one giving valid results ranging from the radiating aperture to, theoretically any distance, but the computational time is rapidly increasing for distances where the other method gives accurate and fast results.

    The aim of the study is to investigate the directional connectivity in brain between children who has good handwriting and poor handwriting. Two children participated in the case study. Test subject was the one that showed symptoms of handwriting difficulty and was identified by her teacher as below average writer. Control subject on the other hand was the one that did not show any symptom of handwriting difficulty and was confirmed by her teacher as average writer. Subjects must trace on the digitizing tablet three different unlined shapes. While doing the drawing task, brain signal were recorded using electroencephalogram (EEG) machine to analyze the information pathway using partial directed coherence (PDC) method in Linux open source. Results showed that subject with poor handwriting mostly drew with non-preferred movement and the brain region that became the source of functional coupling was the frontal region where planning and organizing for execution are performed. Mean-while, subject with good handwriting had performed the tracing with preferred movement and PDC showed that the information source came from occipital area, an indication of visual input and sinked to various brain regions, including temporal area for recognizing shape and frontal area for planning and organizing movement. As conclusion, brain analysis of poor handwriting child shows that the movement planning was poorly executed since frontal area does not have any input from any other sources compared to the brain of good handwriting child which had some input from other sources that makes movement well-planned.

  • Development of a Novel Drive Topology for a Five Phase Stepper Motor

    In this paper, a novel drive topology for a five phase stepper motor is described in detail. Commercially off the shelf, low cost, standard stepper motor drive ICs are used to derive a novel drive topology for five phase stepper motors which enables closed loop speed and position control powered by inner current control loop. It is proved that the derived topology can be generalized to any stepper motor with higher odd number of phases. The designed driver consists of full step, half step, clockwise and counter clockwise drive modes with the speed control and current control.

  • Quantification of solar inverter efficiency for Indian tropical climatic conditions

    Project developers rely on the peak efficiency specified by inverter manufacturers to estimate the generation capacity of solar PV power plants. However, the varying nature of the DC input power to the inverters, caused due to varying irradiation, leads to deviations of the actual efficiency from the peak efficiency. Two weighted average efficiencies, namely the Euro efficiency and California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency address this issue by weighting the major DC input power levels that the inverter is likely to operate in with respect to the amount of time in a year that the inverter resides in a particular operating level. Since the Euro efficiency and the CEC efficiency are location specific to Trier, Germany and Sacramento, California respectively, they would not yield accurate estimations of the inverter efficiency when used in other locations. The weighted average inverter efficiency will need to be formulated taking location specific irradiation profiles into account in order to arrive at a more reliable figure that can be used to estimate the annual generation capacity of solar PV power plants. This paper brings out the shortcomings of the Euro efficiency and discusses an approach to estimate the weighted average efficiency of inverters for tropical climatic conditions in India.

The cost of the design is an error when compared to the IEEE standard, of up to 1 unit in last place (ulp) when used with partial nearest value rounding, or up to 2 ulp without rounding. Comparisons against the best reported multipliers in the literature show that the proposed module can outperform them.

  • Pulse Active Transform (PAT): A non-invertible transformation with application to ECG biometric authentication

    This paper presents a new transformation technique called the Pulse Active transform (PAT). The PAT uses a series of harmonically related periodic triangular waveforms to decompose a signal into a finite set of pulse active features. These features incorporate the signal's information in the pulse active domain, and which are subsequently processed for some desired application. PAT is non-invertible thus ensuring complete security of the original signal source. In this paper PAT is demonstrated on an ECG signal and used for biometric authentication. The new transformation technique is tested on 112 PTB subjects. It is shown in this paper that the new transformation has a superior performance compared to the conventional characteristic based feature extraction methods with additional security to avoid recovery of the original ECG.

  • Wastewater treatment plant control by combining fuzzy logic and nonlinear estimation

    The paper presents the application of fuzzy control and nonlinear estimation to wastewater treatment plants. This biological process is highly nonlinear and its control is a challenging task due to unmeasured variables and input disturbances. Fuzzy control is quite efficient to reduce the effect of unmeasured disturbances, but the used structure requires the measurement of all the state variables. In order to estimate the unmeasured ones, a nonlinear estimator is proposed. The final control structure is composed by the nonlinear estimator and the fuzzy control. The applicability of the proposed approach is validated via simulations.

  • Future Internet Design - Restructuring the Internet Economy

    The growth of broad and traffic and applications using the Internet has been exponential in the past few years. Internet working applications have significantly impacted human lives. The Internet and in particular the lower 2 layers have changed significantly in the past decade or so. To meet the emerging demands of end-users, networks have evolved from a bandwidth intensive and quality sensitive perspective. We discuss new technology choices that have emerged in the past few years and how these would impact network design in the near future. In particular, the colloquium discusses optical metro, access and long haul technologies including WDM and Carrier Ethernet. The technology choices in the optical and data layer have a strong impact on Future Internet design. Based on these technology choices we develop a road- map for Future Internet design and how it would impact services, applications, technologies and communities. We also discuss briefly the Indian broadband scenario from an access and metro perspective.

  • A research on fast OFDM modulation for 3GPP LTE transmitter

    In this paper, we propose a latency reduction scheme for an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulator and apply it to a 3GPP LTE transmitter. In the OFDM modulator, latency is composed of the latencies of inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT), re-ordering and cyclic prefix (CP) addition. The proposed scheme reduces this latency by adding a phase pre- rotator to the IFFT input part and implementing IFFT with decimation in time (DIT) structure. Since this makes the output of IFFT be in-order and contain the cyclic prefix, the OFDM modulation latency is reduced by half compared to the conventional design. Implemented in VHDL, the operation of the proposed OFDM modulator is successfully verified for the three different types of cyclic prefixes in LTE.
