North American Field Trials and Early Applications in Telephony

Biomedical thermometry-a simple fiber optic approach

A portable, fluorescence-based fiber-optic thermometer for use in the 30-50 degrees C range has been constructed using inexpensive solid state electronic and optoelectronic components. A novel measurement scheme allows greater noise discrimination to be achieved with such low bandwidth components. The system is described and discussed, and results of its calibration are reported.


Polarization insensitive measurement of the fiber-optic nonlinear refractive index

Application of harmonics detection to the measurement of mode field radius in single-mode optical fibers

In this paper, new techniques for the easy implementation of the measurement of the mode field radius in single-mode optical fibers are discussed. All of them are based on a dynamical filtering of the fiber output radiation and on a subsequent detection of suitable harmonic components. The capabilities of these procedures are considered, showing typical experimental results.
