PDL effects in PMD emulators made out with HiBi fibers: building PMD/PDL emulators

dos Santos, A.B.; von der Weid, J.P. Photonics Technology Letters, IEEE, 2004

Nonnegligible polarization-dependent loss (PDL) arises when HiBi fiber-based polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) emulators are spooled in small diameters. PMD/PDL emulators with random fluctuating PDL can be made with loops along the polarization-maintaining fiber sections. Theoretical predictions for PDL statistics agree with the experimental results.

Biomedical thermometry-a simple fiber optic approach

Grattan, K.T.V.; Khalil, N.; Palmer, A.W. Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions on, 1988

A portable, fluorescence-based fiber-optic thermometer for use in the 30-50 degrees C range has been constructed using inexpensive solid state electronic and optoelectronic components. A novel measurement scheme allows greater noise discrimination to be achieved with such low bandwidth components. The system is described and discussed, and results of its calibration are reported.

Application of adaptive filtering to digital closed-loop fiber optic gyroscope

Li Xuyou; He Zhou; Zhang Chen; Wang Gang Mechatronics and Automation, 2009. ICMA 2009. International Conference on, 2009

When the system mathematical model and the noise statistical properties are not very accurate, the Kalman filtering will reduce the precision of filtering, and even lead to filter divergence. In view of this, adaptive filtering which based on the principle of Kalman filtering is proposed. By comparison experiment, it can be obtained that the adaptive filtering can achieve better filtering effect ...

A new algorithm for exploring and optimizing optical fibre designs using a two dimensional genome with latent, redundant and master genes

Poladian, L. Evolutionary Computation, 2003. CEC '03. The 2003 Congress on, 2003

A new evolutionary algorithm is developed for the optimisation of optical fibre designs. Most traditional fibre designs are circularly symmetric. In recent years, interest in fibres with more complex symmetries and designs has been stimulated by advances in fabrication methods. Here, the fibre design is derived from a set of genes represented by an arbitrary two dimensional array of real ...

Impact of embedding techniques in FBG sensors

Jianzhong Hao; Guangxi Peng; Chin-Yi Liaw; Wee Chye Ho; Lihao Chen; Takahashi, S.; Jun Hong Ng; Xiaoqun Zhou; Chao Lu Communications Systems, 2004. ICCS 2004. The Ninth International Conference on, 2004

Embedded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have been fabricated for use as pressure sensors to measure forces applied in the direction perpendicular to the fiber axis. The 1 cm length acrylate-coated FBGs were embedded into fiber-reinforced composites in two orientations in separate samples to test the properties of pressure sensor in each case. In samples where the FBG is embedded in ...
