We report the design and demonstration of a novel narrow-linewidth fiber laser that is switchable (at microsecond speeds) to precise predesignated wavelengths. This simple multiwavelength source, based on off-the-shelf components (fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and fiber Fabry-Perot filters), appears very promising for wavelength-division multiplexing.

A new method for splicing KVH Industries D-fiber using automatic polarization and fiber core alignment is described. A Fujikura FSM-45PM splicer is used in this process for achieving consistent splice loss less than 0.5 dB and Polarization Extinction Ratio greater than 25 dB.

We have suggested two strategies for path protection in WDM networks-one for path protection without spare capacity sharing and one that allows the spare capacities to be shared. Heuristic algorithms for efficiently determining the working and protection light-paths have been proposed and their performances studied through simulations on a model of the ARPA-2 network.
