Modeling and Control of a Manufacturing Flow Line Using Partial Differential Equations

Roel van den Berg; Erjen Lefeber; Koos Rooda IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2008

This brief deals with a control framework for manufacturing flow lines. For this framework, a continuous approximation model of the manufacturing system is required, which is computationally feasible and able to accurately describe the dynamics of the system (both throughput and flow time). Often used models, such as discrete-event models and flow models, fail to meet these specifications: the use ...

Extraction of ERP from EEG data

Andriy Ivannikov; Tommi Karkkainen; Tapani Ristaniemi; Heikki Lyytinen 2007 9th International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, 2007

In this article, a simple but novel technique for extracting a linear subspace related to event related potentials (ERPs) from ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) data is introduced. The technique consists of a sequence of basic linear operations applied to multidimensional EEG data in a problem-specific manner. The derivation of the proposed technique is given and results with real data are described together ...

The role of simulation in advanced planning and scheduling

K. Musselman; J. O'Reilly; S. Duket Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference, 2002

The tasks of planning and scheduling in manufacturing have evolved from simplistic material requirements planning systems to today's sophisticated advanced planning and scheduling systems. While planning is concerned with the long-range determination of what needs to be manufactured, typically over a relatively long time period, scheduling is the task of deciding how that manufacturing is to be accomplished, typically over ...

Clean technologies developments based on a grant function in distributed generation planning

A. Zangeneh; S. Jadid; A. Rahimi-kian 2008 40th North American Power Symposium, 2008

Distributed generation expansion planning (DGEP) has been frequently reported in the literature around the world. However, no studies have been published yet that include type of distributed generation technologies and environmental constraints in the planning process. In this paper, a multiobjective optimization algorithm is applied to produce a Pareto set of optimal planning schemes by taking into account different objective ...

  • Influences of Technical Documentation and Its Translation on Efficiency and Customer Satisfaction

Modern manuals typically accompany products that are distributed to multiple countries. Therefore, they must be given in multiple languages. Because those manuals include the same instructions in multiple languages, they are usually written in the primary language of the manufacturing company and then translated into the remaining languages. This can cause problems with procedures and terminology. In this chapter, the author explains from her experience why this is so, what tools are available to help, and the resulting challenges faced by technical communicators. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems integrate internal and external management information across an entire organization, embracing finance/accounting, manufacturing, sales and service, and customer relationship management. Document management systems (DMS) for technical documentation manage the files directly in the format in which they will be published. The chapter focuses on the technical documentation department and thus on DMS and content management systems (CMS).

  • Industrial Case: Organizing for ERP within a Large Information Technology Shop

This chapter shows how to put matrix management principles to work within a large information technology (IT) organization that is starting to use enterprise resource planning (ERP) packages to perform its standard business functions. It provides some insights into how to structure an information technology (IT) organization to facilitate communications, teamwork, and getting the work done effectively. Such organizations are complex, and there are always a lot of distractions occurring that inhibit performance. Before venturing forth, one should develop a plan of attack, beginning with reviewing background information about the firm, its products, and the organizations that it has chartered to do the work. Understanding customer expectations and the governance requirements that the regulatory organizations place on the computing platform that must be met in order for the firm to do business should be focused upon.
