    Photovoltaically operated reverse osmosis plants in off-grid operation constitute a promising system technology for meeting a part of the water requirements in regions without dependable water supply and electric grid system power supply. This paper presents a new procedure for optimum system design configuration. The goal is to provide the cheapest possible water supply while fulfilling all regional and technical boundary conditions. The starting point of the procedure is a rough design based on a load duration curve. Subsequent time sequence simulations which image the system behaviour completely, permit checking of various plant variants for compliance with the boundary conditions. Objective mutual comparisons of the plant variants are possible, also taking the system costs into consideration. The possibilities of the developed procedure are demonstrated taking a village supply in Northeast Brazil as example.

The simulated results show that the characteristics of the HDH desalination system is sensitive to the mass flow rate ratio between the seawater and humid air. It was seen that the maximum value of the freshwater production arrives at m<sub>w</sub>=60.43kgh<sup>-1</sup> when the balance condition of the dehumidifier, HCR<sub>d</sub>=1, is obtained. For the aspect of the gained output ratio (GOR), the corresponding top value is GOR=2.69. It is concluded that the solar-driven HDH desalination has great advantages compared to the conventional solar still. The obtained results provide some significant references for the design and optimization of the HDH desalination system.

  • Water desalination with evaporation from environmental friendly waste heat source

    Today and in the future the demand on freshwater increases and not only in sunny countries, but also in a lot of other parts of the world. Right now a lot of people do not have enough freshwater for their daily life and in the future it grows more acute. One reason is the global warming and another reason is the rise of the worldwide population. Additional the available freshwater resources are polluted more and more. Therefore possibilities must be found to produce a huge amount of freshwater without producing a lot of carbon dioxide. Only with this combination the future freshwater demand and the problem of global warming can be tackled. One possibility to produce freshwater was shown in the Sunwater project, which was undertaken between 2009 and 2011. This project was a cooperation between Germany and Egypt and was initialized by this author. During this project it was researched if solar energy can directly be used to convert saltwater into freshwater without producing electrical energy, but this is just one possibility to produce usable freshwater for the daily life in an environmental friendly way. Another possibility is to use other waste heat sources for the desalination of saltwater or brackish water. The used desalination unit can be operated with in wide range available waste heat sources. These waste heat sources can come for example from power stations like gas power stations or nuclear power stations, from air conditioners or usable thermal waste heat from the steel industry. At the moment a lot of waste heat is produced with this installations, which is unused and released to the environment. With different technology combinations the already available thermal energy can be used for the operation of the desalination unit. If the waste heat comes from an environmental friendly energy source like nuclear power stations, geo thermal or solar thermal, the freshwater is also produced complete in an environmental friendly way. This great chance of using waste heat will be discussed in this paper.

  • Apparatus for Open-Cycle OTEC Heat and Mass Transfer Experiments at the Seacoast Test Facility

    Recently, the open-cycle OTEC system has been a focal research area for the U.S. OTEC program. Simultaneous production of electric power and desalinated water using OTEC plants has a potential for near-term commercialization. Desalinated water is produced when a surface condenser is used in the open- cycle or hybrid-cycle OTEC plant. To date, no seawater experiments have been carried out for flash evaporation and passive deaeration in a prototypical configuration. Furthermore, data are lacking for surface-condenser design and the effects of noncondensable gases. A reliable system-integration study cannot be carried out, or the potential of open-cycle and hybrid-cycle OTEC plants be evaluated, until seawater experiments are performed using a prototypical apparatus. This paper discusses experimental research for the open-cycle heat- and mass-transfer program. The apparatus will be designed for existing seawater capabilities of 1600 gpm (103 kg/s) warm-water and 1000 gpm (65 kg/s) cold-water flow rates. It will be possible to test components in the range of 0.5 to 1 MWt heat capacity. Initial experiments will include performance testing of single- and three-vertical-spout configurations, deaeration studies, and scoping tests for a surface condenser using an existing heat exchanger. Later, a prototypical surface condenser will be designed and tested in this apparatus. The paper describes salient features of the apparatus and instrumentation for conducting seawater experiments for the open-cycle system.

  • Minimum Startup Time Control of an Ion Exchange Process used for Water Desalination

    Problem for minimum time control of an ion exchange process for desalination of water is formulated and solved on the basis of an augmented functional of Lagrange. Decomposition method is used to solve the problem in two level calculation structure. Decomposition subproblems solved on the first and second level of the calculating structure are determined.   • Release of product inhibition in fermentation process

    Product feedback inhibitions exist in the industrial fermentation process, and limit the production performance of fermentation. Integration of fermentation and separation of fermentative products is the major way to release product inhibition. In-situ separations remove products from the culture media in a timely manner in the fermentation process. It could reduce product inhibition, control pH, and improve the utilization of raw materials and product yield. This paper describes several commonly used product separation methods, with emphasis on applications and advantages of bipolar membrane electrodialysis in fermentative products separation.

  • The Study of Solar Desalination System with Falling Film Evaporation and Its Operation

    The seawater desalination system with falling film evaporation was set up, which was driven by solar-wind energy. In addition, the basic principles of system operation were expounded, and the main factors affecting the system performance were discussed. The results showed that the latent heat of vapor and the heat of brine were utilized repeatedly in the system. In addition, the system had a higher performance coefficient, which had good transient and steady-state performance of producing freshwater.
