  • One Crisis, Two Responses: A Transboundary Analysis of the Melamine‐Tainted Milk Powder Crisis in China and Taiwan

    The melamine‐tainted milk powder crisis was a serious transregional crises of the twenty‐first century in Greater China. To deeply understand crisis communication in a nonwestern context, it is necessary to revise the cultural and institutional assumptions adopted by the majority of current theories developed in western democratic societies. This chapter explores how companies from Mainland China and Taiwan dealt with the crisis in terms of traditional culture and institutional factors that influenced the crisis response. This provides insight into the practice and effect of crisis communication in the Chinese context. It is based upon Lyu's comparative study of the crisis communication strategies (CCSs) adopted by companies from Mainland China and Taiwan in this. The chapter illustrates and theorizes the complex interrelations that exist among Chinese traditions and their various institutional contexts, and elaborates upon the contextual factors that influence CCSs to develop a holistic approach to the study of crisis communication in the Chinese context.

  • The Role of Public (Mis)perceptions in the Acceptance of New Food Technologies: Implications for Food Nanotechnology Applications

    New food technologies encounter problems with successfully entering the consumer market due to perceived public perceptions and concerns. Communication of new developments in food processing plays a critical role in public perceptions and adoption of new food technologies. The presentation of science by the media can affect the public perception of science and public support for legislation and policy. The genetic modification of food is a key example of how information dissemination has impacted public perceptions of the technology. Nanotechnology is creating a revolution in food packaging. The successful adoption of new food technologies is not guaranteed, regardless of scientific support, economic value, enhanced benefits, and minimum risks. The public demands participation in scientific and technical decisions in a move from an uncritical acceptance of new science and technology to solve social and historical problems to one of social scrutiny linked to the perceptions of risks and benefits of development.

  • Smart Economic Development

    Smart economic development is dependent upon holistic and routine evaluation of economic and societal frameworks. These frameworks need to be assessed and modified as part of an ongoing continuous improvement process. This chapter describes the relationship between smart economic development and sustainability. It prompts evaluation in the mechanics of sustainability‐focused education. It also establishes the view that the measurement of success of smart economic development may not be captured in present, standardly used metrics, namely, gross domestic product (GDP), given that the underlying values that support GDP expansion may be inconsistent with the success parameters associated with sustainability. The chapter also discusses the significance of culture, specifically conscious consumption in enabling sustainable outcomes. Establishment of rational agent decision‐making and responsible conscious consumption provides the conduit for paradigm shifting from consumerism to sustainability.

  • Case Studies

    The advancement of wireless communications,micro/nanofabrication, printing electronics, and integrated circuit technologies has enabled the development of low‐cost chipless radio‐frequency identification (RFID) sensor nodes. RFID technology is considered as the foundation for internet of things (IoT) and smart cities. The chipless RFID sensor can be used for various application areas such as food safety and retail, disaster management, health, military, homeland security, smart cities, transportation, agriculture, infrastructure, and environment monitoring. For each application area, there are different technical issues that researchers are currently resolving. However, many of them are trying to overcome the application‐specific technological challenge. Specifically, RFID readers need to reconfigure to operate in that application and RFID sensors position and orientation becomes vital for reading and interpolate results. In this regard, the effectiveness of some proposed approaches must be complemented by the supports of hardware design, implementation, and system integration.

    This chapter examines the pedagogical strategies adopted by faculty teaching in the Master of Arts in Technical Communication and E-Learning program at the University of Limerick, Ireland. It discusses the literature that informs pedagogical approaches used in this MA program and then outlines the program, its components, and its learning outcomes. The chapter informs teachers of the importance of teaching learning pedagogies and intercultural communication to technical students. It provides teachers with ideas and approaches for how to teach these subjects more effectively by providing insights and highlighting sample assigments that one have successfully integrated into curriculum. The chapter overviews key literature relating to teaching intercultural communication and focuses on three particular areas-collaboration, information design, and rhetorical awareness. It considers synergies within the localization, e-learning and technical communication sectors of the Irish software industry.
